Why can't you flip the base and adjuster around 180 degrees so that they slide down and back rather than up and back? If the seat base pattern is symmetrical, you should be able to flip it.

I may be mistaken, but if you turned only the exposed metal wedge around would you not be tilted toward the front of the GMC instead of level? You would have to flip both the exposed metal base and the base under the carpet to keep it level.

I'm 6'5" and have a 76 Eleganza that had OEM seats. Although I found them uncomfortable, my problem was with legroom rather than height. I had a welder add a 2" plate to the base and it gave me additional room to slide back. That didn't work as well in my rear twin Royale since the driver's seat hit the kitchen cabinet.
I've never felt as though I'm looking through the top of the windshield and, in fact, would like to sit a bit higher up. (Maybe a cushion). I do have the round wooden ball seat covers and after a few hours of driving I think I could count those balls with my bony rear end.
I think the '76 seats must have been very different from the '73s although both could stand upgrading. My 65 year old semi-arthritic body could use some upgrading, also.

Admittedly, since I've only been able to drive about 50 miles in my coach without breakdown, my experience is limited. However, the Flex-Steel seats that came with "Money Pit" are VERY comfortable even though the fabric is very worn.

After I got back from San Antonio a year ago, I could hardly walk. Limped into my doctor's place and the P.A. did a history. Then she asked for my wallet. It's about an inch thick. She claimed if I toss it someplace, it keeps from favoring one cheek when seated, which leads sometimes to a pinched nerve. I found out, she's right. Any chance you're sitting on a wallet or something like on one side?

I'm opting for electrically adjustable seats next time.

Have you considered adding spacers to raise the seat? Washers, close pipe nipples, uni-strut between the seat and rails, even a little helps. I have done that to almost every vehicle I have ever owned. Not tall, but I seem to have long legs and like to sit high and back.

The seats in my 2006 Toyota Sienna are great. The drivers seat (powered) has a powered lumbar support bag which I find very good. (It only has one armrest though, but I think I could work around that)
Middle row have similar seats to the Oddessey. I'd certainly look for a set from a breakers yard. They are still in very good condition even after 8 years, two kids and 120,000 miles
Would cloth (in good condition) be better than leather/pleather? With the glass house and dubious air would leather/pleather not get kind of sticky?

You answered my questions albeit indirectly.
What you can do is buy a set of Odyssey seats and install them on swivel bases like the ones in this presentation:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g5090-seats-from-honda-odyssey.html
Those seat bases are available from Cinnabar 1-800-720-2227; talk to Steve.
They come in two heights: 8 inch and 10 inch, IIRC Steve said only the 10 were left.
The Honda seats use the built in front to rear adjustment.
Regards,
Rob M.""
Don't forget that the Chrysler/Dodge seats are the same and much more plentiful. Also they are availabel in cloth:

Iām going to hold and run the snot out of it this summer.
The seats I have are not ideal, but they will work, and there are a ton of other things i need to attend to.
BTW, I found the top for the air cleaner.

My coach has FlexSteel front seats which I love. I don't know if Norris fitted them or a PO stuck them in. They're done in cloth, when it dies I will have several naugas sacrificed for a recover. I can't afford leather, but Naugahyde and vinyl shed fur which cloth does not. If I ever downgrade to a 26 footer, the seats will trade before the 23 foot leaves.
