Hi,
I am atm looking at the above coach sitting in Charlottesville VA, and
have a couple of questions:
* Is it okay that the floor when pressed from the bottom is a bit soft?
Like cardbox feeling?
* Any one has a pic of how the bunk beds look at the wall? One side was
broken off, and not sure what that tells me.
* The isolator pads seem mostly gone missing. Big deal?
* It has recent VA inspection, but the brakes feel that they are not
really capable of holding back the car on a decline.
Car hasn't been really moved around in the past 20 month or so.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
PS: I am on.site atm,

Hi,
I am atm looking at the above coach sitting in Charlottesville VA, and have a couple of questions:
* Is it okay that the floor when pressed from the bottom is a bit soft? Like cardbox feeling?
FLOOR IN THAT 1977 GMC IS A SANDWICH WHICH FROM TOP TO BOTTOM IS - CARPET - 1" PLYWOOD - 3/4" STYROFOAM - THIN ALUMINUM. IT IS
POSSIBLE TO PUSH IT IN A BIT FROM THE BOTTOM. SOFT FLOOR ON THE INSIDE MEANS THE PLYWOOD IS ROTTEN.
* Any one has a pic of how the bunk beds look at the wall? One side was broken off, and not sure what that tells me.
TRY GOING TO THE PHOTOSITE (http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/) AND SEARCH FOR "BUNK"
* The isolator pads seem mostly gone missing. Big deal?
PARTS BOOK 78Z PAGE 23-76 SHOWS THE ISOLATOR PAD TO BE LONG PIECES FRONT TO REAR NOT INDIVIDUAL PADS.
* It has recent VA inspection, but the brakes feel that they are not really capable of holding back the car on a decline.
IT IS NOT CLEAR HOW YOU CAME TO THIS CONCLUSION CONSIDERING THE SENTENCE BELOW. ARE YOU SAYING THAT YOU'RE JUST SITTING IN THE
VEHICLE AND PRESSING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL? IS THAT CORRECT OR DID THE BRAKES NOT STOP THE VEHICLE AS YOU WOULD EXPECT WHEN YOU DROVE
IT?
Car hasn't been really moved around in the past 20 month or so.
DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS QUESTION.

Hello Robert,
thanks for your input. I did read those documents probably a gazillion
times, but did not have them with me. My mistake.

That sounds positive. From the top things look okay, I wasn't aware that
the bottom is meant to be a bit soft.

Thanks. /me slaps myself for not lmgtfy.com - I appreciate the hint! And
found one which pretty much shows a different piece of metal:
<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/installing-blinds-amp-valences/p19315.html>
compared to
<https://cloud.theinternet.de/public.php?service=files&t=eef9848bd9568e7e04ea43cd8707aa07>

Interesting. This means that the pads must have been refitted in 2006,
when the 2nd last owner did some renovations to it.
> * It has recent VA inspection, but the brakes feel that they are not really capable of holding back the car on a decline.

Well, the car did stop. But it was a very unsafe feeling during that
braking. I understand that it is a heavy car (as it was not road ready
it wasn't even close to maximum weight, I assume), and it took way more
effort to stop that I had expected it to. I've driven 70s cars with drum
brakes before, and the feeling was definitely worse.
> Car hasn't been really moved around in the past 20 month or so.

It is not a question, but an additional information to the other
questions. Some pics can be seen at
<https://cloud.theinternet.de/public.php?service=files&t=29617c04630ec8d62be2b09d5e954bb0>
. Maybe someone can make some suggestions on the state of the car based
on those issues visible on the car. I will go back on Monday to have a
final talk with the owner.

Any chance you could take the coach to Woodbridge, Va, for Leigh Harrison to inspect?

Thanks for the hint. I'll think about it. My plane back to Germany is
leaving on Tuesday midday, so timing is kinda tight, but nevertheless it
might work out. atm I am 60mls south of the GMC's location, and
Woodbrige is another 90mls north. I am waiting what others have to say,
and take it from there. Thanks again.

Peer.
Excuse the "T" I responded in the middle of the night on one of my "P" breaks! ;-)
I went to look at your photos and the following pops up:
The site's security certificate is not trusted!
You attempted to reach cloud.theinternet.de, but the server presented a certificate issued by an entity that is not trusted by your
computer's operating system. This may mean that the server has generated its own security credentials, which Google Chrome cannot
rely on for identity information, or an attacker may be trying to intercept your communications.
You should not proceed, especially if you have never seen this warning before for this site.
Proceed anyway Back to safety
I clicked on Proceed anyway only to find that the photos you have posted are HUGE files between 1 - 2.5 MB. The only way you can
view them is to download them. I put a check in each of the windows and downloaded 24.7 mb of photos which I will comment on below:
ANOTHER DRY SEAL - photograph of the upper left corner of the windshield and driver side window showing the gap between those window
seals and body filled with sealant. I'm guessing that it is a black tar like substance the quite a few of us use in that area.
AWNING PART 1 & 2 - I believe this to be an A&E / Dometic awning which is the same as I have on Double Trouble, they work fine.
CAN'T DECIPHER THE DOT DATA - That makes two of us! I read DOT (7BAK PKA) (070?). There should be four numbers in second group which
would provide the tire manufacturing date. The first two digits are the week of the year the tire was manufactured and the last two
the year it was manufactured.
Ref: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11
DOES THIS SEAL LOOK LIKE BAD NEWS - No big deal, it's just shrunk, you'd have to find someone that had a spare window and get them
to cut you a short section to splice in and seal.
DOOR BOARD AND MISSING WINDOW GASKETS - The door board is wavy probably because water leaked in behind it. Can't tell what gaskets
are missing from you picture.
HEADER COMING DOWN - Not uncommon in these old gals, it is possible to spray it and the ceiling with contact glue and stick it back
up.
LOOKS LIKE MAKING SURE THAT STUFF DOESN'T COME IN - Sloppy joint resealing would need to be redone by scraping out the old crap and
resealing with quality sealer.
NICE VIEW FROM THE REAR LEFT - No comment
STICKER PART 1 & 2 - No comment
TOP VIEW - Above Couch - No comment
TOP VIEW - Roof - No Comment
As far as the brakes go you really need someone with experience driving a GMC with good OEM brakes to drive this coach to give a
good assessment.
Regards,
Rob M.

Morning Peer
Seems you have a nice unrestored coach here
I think all the handmade seals sagging ceiling etc is what you should expect unless the coach is restored
Also weak breaks is not a bick deal. You want to do those anyway unless you find one with new break. You might even get lucky and get away with new fluids and linings.
You have alcoas witch is good
More important is how is the frame, the steering the wheels bearing and pins
But do remember this is arough coach and you will be redoing it all before you are happy
The question is do you want to spent the money during renovation or would you prefere to spent it all at once on a renovated coach
Sometimes one can get luckey and find a coach with a lot of updates for a fair price

Hello Robert,
> Excuse the "T" I responded in the middle of the night on one of my "P" breaks! ;-)
No problem. You aren't first, and won't be the last.
> I went to look at your photos and the following pops up:
I am too cheap to throw my money to someone, just so they can verify
something for me. I use the SSL connection purely to limit myself from
snoopying free wifis in coffee shops et al, and a free certificate is
enough for me. Sorry if it has caused you trouble or concern.
> [..] the photos you have posted are HUGE files between 1 - 2.5 MB. The only way you can
> view them is to download them. I put a check in each of the windows and downloaded 24.7 mb of photos which I will comment on below:
owncloud seems to always download the full files, even when in slideshow
mode. I purposefully put up the full files, so people would be able to
even see details I might have been missing.
EDIT: What I just found out is, when you are on the listing page, there
is a small button up to the top right that looks four squares in a
square. If you hit that, you get a larger preview of the pics, without
the need to download the full pics.
> ANOTHER DRY SEAL - photograph of the upper left corner of the windshield and driver side window showing the gap between those window

good.
> AWNING PART 1 & 2 - I believe this to be an A&E / Dometic awning which is the same as I have on Double Trouble, they work fine.
Do you know if replacement parts exist for the arms? They do not seem to
function the way they suppose to function.

And here I thought I was the only one :) As the current owner never
changed tires and has the coach since 2006 I assume that tires should be
changed.
> DOES THIS SEAL LOOK LIKE BAD NEWS - No big deal, it's just shrunk, you'd have to find someone that had a spare window and get them

Is this stuff you can find easily, is it available from one of the GMC
MH vendors, or only through swap meets and stuff?
> DOOR BOARD AND MISSING WINDOW GASKETS - The door board is wavy probably because water leaked in behind it. Can't tell what gaskets
> are missing from you picture.
Looking at
<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/almost-restored-door/p9751.html> I
see the white surrounding of the window. That surrounding seems to be
missing on my pic.
> HEADER COMING DOWN - Not uncommon in these old gals, it is possible to spray it and the ceiling with contact glue and stick it back

okay.
> LOOKS LIKE MAKING SURE THAT STUFF DOESN'T COME IN - Sloppy joint resealing would need to be redone by scraping out the old crap and

so only a cosmetic issue, as the current owner reports no current leaks,
and I did not smell something that would indicate anything contrary.
> As far as the brakes go you really need someone with experience driving a GMC with good OEM brakes to drive this coach to give a

Thank you for all your notes. It was very helpful. The owner currently
wants 12k USD for this, and I wonder if it is a fair price. afaict, I am
looking at a minimum of 4-5k to invest into it (more if major break work
is needed, and/or the interior can't be fixed by some spray-on glue), to
make it presentable to SWMBO without fear of divorce papers hitting my
inbox.

Peer,
The first decade of tire coding was only three digits. Therefore,
those tires would have been made in the seventh week of 1990.
I would say they were due for replacement.

No problem. You aren't first, and won't be the last.

I am too cheap to throw my money to someone, just so they can verify
something for me. I use the SSL connection purely to limit myself from
snoopying free wifis in coffee shops et al, and a free certificate is
enough for me. Sorry if it has caused you trouble or concern.

owncloud seems to always download the full files, even when in slideshow
mode. I purposefully put up the full files, so people would be able to
even see details I might have been missing.
EDIT: What I just found out is, when you are on the listing page, there
is a small button up to the top right that looks four squares in a
square. If you hit that, you get a larger preview of the pics, without
the need to download the full pics.

good.

Do you know if replacement parts exist for the arms? They do not seem to
function the way they suppose to function.

And here I thought I was the only one :) As the current owner never
changed tires and has the coach since 2006 I assume that tires should be
changed.

Is this stuff you can find easily, is it available from one of the GMC
MH vendors, or only through swap meets and stuff?

Looking at
<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/almost-restored-door/p9751.html> I
see the white surrounding of the window. That surrounding seems to be
missing on my pic.

okay.

so only a cosmetic issue, as the current owner reports no current leaks,
and I did not smell something that would indicate anything contrary.

Thank you for all your notes. It was very helpful. The owner currently
wants 12k USD for this, and I wonder if it is a fair price. afaict, I am
looking at a minimum of 4-5k to invest into it (more if major break work
is needed, and/or the interior can't be fixed by some spray-on glue), to
make it presentable to SWMBO without fear of divorce papers hitting my
inbox.

Yes, I think the tires look to good for being 90s vintage. I looked at
all of the mounted tires and the pic I took was from the one where I
could see most DOT information. Some had lost all the markings. So yeah,
those tires are probably good for transferring the coach to its initial
final destination (what an oxymoron), but not for using it with the
family. Now let's see if Monday's meet with the seller causes both sides
to come to an agreement on the value of the car. I'll keep you all posted.

After looking at just one GMC in person, I came to the conclusion that
some outside pics of a car are not able to show whether or not something
is a bargain :/

Veery true, Peer. If you EVER find one that looks anywhere near as good as
the photos, please let me know. :-)
When I first began my search for a GMC in '98, I was amazed at how bad all
the ones in Atlanta, GA were. I wound up in west Texas buying one -- which
looked even worse than the sad pictures, but was mechanically updated --
though not enough to get me back to GA in one piece. :-(
Good luck!

Peer,
There is an unwritten rule when it come to buying and owning and updating a GMC and it has been pretty close to being true 70 to 75
% of the time. Some do it for less depending on the quality of finish they want or you can have the work done by others and the cost will exceed these estimates considerably. The difference here in not the labor, but the cost of materials and upgrades that you wish to purchase, your labor is free. With the starting cost down from a few years ago it may change the overall price down somewhat, but here goes!
If you buy a coach for:
Purchase price Cost for repairs, upgrades and Stuff Aprox. Final Cost
$5000 $25000 $30000
$10000 $20000 $30000
$15000 $15000 $30000
I think you get the idea, and I don’t need to further. It is not to scare you off from owning a GMC but the possible cost you could spend on bringing it up to your standards, wants and needs.
