Bring a unit in last night about 30 miles from home and I heard a pop then what I thought was an exhaust leak. The engine lost some power so I managed to get it to the next exit. When I stopped I left the engine running and opened up the hatch to see what was going on as I put my hand down near the #7 cylinder and felt a strong stream of air. The spark plug had popped out and was dangling, still connected to the plug wire. The threads on the plug were not stripped but the first 3/8' of threads of the plug hole were. I pulled the plug out and buttoned it back up and managed to limp it home the last 25 miles firing on 7 cylinders. Good thing Florida is flat. Anybody have any ideas for a fix that does not require the head coming off? Is there a plug that has a longer thread pattern that I can stick in there that will get me beyond the stripped area?
Thanx. David

David,

Here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHCv0xmeLHg

It is easy to access the spark plugs with the wheel and wheel well removed.

Rob. Thanx. I just opened it up and saw that the PO had put a spark plug extender in it or it was an adapter for a compression gauge left in there. I pulled the extender gaped the plug and thru it back it there and she fired right up. Good to know that these babys will run fine firing on 7 holes.
Thanx. David

The numbers on the side of the extender are M14LR.

Do what Rob showed in the video.

Find a piece of rubber hose that will fit inside the cylinder. Step it up
with an assortment of hoses until it will fit on a shop vacuum. Vacuum that
cylinder until you you figure it's all set to fire up. Then do it again !

You don't ANY scraps of metal inside that cylinder....

It was not an unusual problem on air cooled VWs

About 5 years ago I had a champion plug blow apart in #4 hole and damage the valve. We limped home 400 miles towing a toyota truck over a 9000 ft mountian. My wife was afraid to drive the stick shift truck in the mountian. I seem to remember 5 miles an hour in low gear praying I would make the summit on the steepest pass.

David,

That extender could be to prevent oil fouling:
