My Onan is running great now that I have the correct plugs in it. And I've had no oil consumption issues. I have used the Pertronix system on another Onan. I really liked it until it quit on me. I'm not saying that their bad. It's just a case of it's not broke right now. So I'm not messing with a good running Onan.As to putting out a substitution list of other brands of plugs. Every parts store can refer from a Champion plug. That list would be very long. And a parts store can refer to the brands that they have on hand. Some parts need a list of many name brands. I don't see spark plugs as one of those.Bob Dunahugh GMCMI Member

I have two 6,500 watt Onan generators. Both aren't the drawer mount, have downdraft carbs, and use the generator itself as the starter motor. Both built in 1977. When I checked with the Onan dealer. Those units use a spark plug that has a very long threaded base. Thus those spark plugs are totally not suitable in the 6,000 watt unit. I don't have a modal number for the 4,000 watt unit to call the Onan dealer. If I had the mod number for the 4,000 watt. I could call and check on that.Bob Dunahugh GMCMI Member

Hi Bob

According to the 6A73 Onan operators manual the 1973 4kw BF series Onan
spark plug number is 167-0245. The same part number is also noted in the
9A73 Major Service Manual.

Well. That answered that question on plugs..4,000 watt Onan plugs are Onan number 167-02456,000 watt Onan plugs are Onan number 167-1262. There is a reason that Onan did that.Bob Dunahugh GMCMI Member

I also think that the threaded length of the plug should correspond to the threaded depth of the plug hole in the head.
