There recently were several discussions about finding steel wheels that don't interfere with the stock or larger calipers on the front suspension....

If you use the wheel spacers that Applied GMC and others sell, would that take care of the interference problem?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

If these are the spacers you refer to: http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/656 the answer is yes.

You will undoubtedly receive comments about extending the "fulcrum arm" and there by increasing the stress on the OEM bearings, but
be advised that JimK has been selling these for YEARS and I haven't heard or read any complaints about bearing failure problems.

However, it has been noted here that if you have steering problems these spacers will only exacerbate the problems.

Jim Hupy sells a much thinner spacer: http://bdub.net/jhupy/ which in my opinion would affect the steering a lot less, probably not
at all.

I investigated fitting 16" steel wheels from Southwest Wheel with the help of Don Adams, Bob Dunahugh, and Tom Whitton. From what I
found out with a LOT of input from them there are a number of different size calipers that will fit the GMC; 70mm pistons are OEM,
80mm from other GM vehicles will fit. There are a number of differently shaped calipers of both sizes and from what I can tell the
70mm piston calipers are OK but the 80mm depends on the caliper housing size and shape. As far as the wheels go there are a number
of different part numbers from different vendors. It stands to reason that at this point in time they all come from the same
manufacturer probably in China. I was investigating this so I could help guys in Australia where we CANNOT buy 16 1/2" tires; if you
want them you have to import them personally and that ain't cheap! There was no way that I would say such and such wheel from such
and such company would fit and have an Aussie buy them, have them shipped to Australia and then find out the DIDN'T fit!

At the end of the day it's not that big a problem for someone in the USA to buy ONE wheel from a supplier and try it on their GMC if
it fits good on yah, if not make sure when you buy it you explain that you have a GMC and you're not sure if it will fit or not and
get them to allow you to return it without having to pay a restocking fee. They'll probably make you pay the shipping to you and
back to them if they don't fit.

I obtained these and just used the spacers. couldn't figure out how the hub extender portion was to be installed... (no I didn't ask JimH what to do) had to get it so it would roll.. Smile

If you do it this way, the wheel studs don't go all the way thru the nuts..around about a 1/4" ..

Thankx

Correct on the studs, if you look at the photo on Jim's website you will see the longer studs (nice shiny silver & long) next to the
OEM crappy dirty stud & short). I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that when Jim ships a pair of spacers he ships 16 studs
along with them!

The hub extenders have two holes in them and you drill matching holes in the hub, tap them, then screw the hub extenders to the hub
using Locktite RED.

NOT using those hub extenders is NOT a good idea, they center the wheel, that's their purpose; therefore you could be driving around
on front wheels that are out of whack.
