Back in 1998 when we started full timing (for four years) we initially rigged up towing for our fully restored 1967 VW Westfalia split window. Looked great behind our Beaver Patriot but was not very functional as we spend lots of times in cities and the Westy struggled to keep up with traffic. Sharon really did not like driving that thing in traffic either. I never did like the idea of my knees being the crumple zone! Our boys loved them and I wound up restoring four of them - a 61 single cab, a 64 refrigerator top, 66 combi many window and that 67 Westy. I used the 61 single cab (the last one to go) to great effect as we were restoring our old building but when someone offered a reasonable price it was gone with my compliments. The 1999 Subaru Outback we purchased to replace the Westy made a muuuuuch better tow vehicle for our use. Only issue was it was hard to find an upzoot version of the Outback with a standard transmission. The dealers all wanted to tart them up w
ith as much add on stuff as they could and nearly always speced them in with auto trans which was not towable four wheels down. The standard transmission towed four down without any fuss, just toss it in neutral, unlock the steering wheel and go.
