Rob--I'm still curious why people recommend this unit. I always joke that this is the GMCNET allowed converter. It has a bad reliability history and in my opinion is very noisy. Has anyone other than me tried the IOTA units? They are totally quiet and I have not heard of failures (unlike the PD units)

Bob, I have one of each. Never had a problem with either, nor can I hear the PD.

When I picked up The Mystery Machine it had an IOTA converter that was dead. I bought a PD with the pendant and it’s working fine many years later.

Just my experience.

Bob,

Where are you learning of all these failures? In the 10+ years I've used
them, I've heard of one true failure: The trivial one I had which led to
them replacing the unit despite my reluctance to bother. Their subsequent
popularity is partially due to the story of how they handled that
out-of-warranty non-claim. The only other failures I've heard of occurred
when the power company applied 240 vac to our 120 vac circuits at a
campground in Florida -- 3 of us got new PD's out of that, but paid for by
the power company. With my hearing (or lack thereof), I won't testify
about the sound level, but I have seen no complaints about it.

Bob,

Strange, I have been hanging around here since 2007 and I can't remember reports that the PD units had problems?

HOWEVER, I am electrically challenged and maybe just ignored the reports.

IIRC KenH noted that PD was a good convertor and also a good company to deal with.

I bought a PD-9260 because it fit under the shelf in the cupboard under the bathroom sink. Obviously I don't here it at all.

Last April I had an Inteli-Power PD9140A go bad on me. I replaced it with
another. The original one had a lot of fan noise. The new one doesn't. With
both of them I got and still get a bunch of crud on the coach batteries but
not on the chassis battery.

I have had a PD unit for 10 years. It is plugged in and running 24/7 for months at a time. 10 years ago when I could hear, it made no noise. If it makes noise now, I can not hear it.

We use various sized of the Progressive boxes in remote trucks and vans for 'thumpa' sound systems. No problems with them. I've one under the counter in my coach against the day the original Tripp-Lite 12V supply dies. It hasn'
t yet, I see no need top replace it until it does.

I couldn't be happier with my PD unit (PD-9245). If it's noisy, I never noticed (it is in the rebuilt electrical section under the rear bed, so I doubt I'd hear it even if it WAS noisy, but I don't recall much fan noise when I was working on or around it).

I really (!) like the ability to just leave the coach plugged in all the time, knowing that the batteries will be ready to go at a moment's notice. Try THAT with the original buzz box and you'll be replacing house batteries at least once or twice a year!

I installed a PD9245 right after I got the coach. I bought it from Jim Bounds who recommended it as a "plug and play" unit. It has proven to be just that without one iota of trouble in over five years. The only noise that comes out of my electrical cabinet is from the Harbor Freight inverter when the fan comes on occasionally.

Bob,

It isn't the allowed, it is the recommended - Big Difference in my book.

I replaced my dead buzzbox with PD 9145 and pendant because it was less expensive than a Iota. Plain and simple. If I had known how long I was going to keep the coach, I might have thought longer as I have a long history with Iota in the marine (sailboat) work that I did do before the depression. I also used to put in more than a few Xantrex inverter/chargers, but they have gone to a poorly controlled (imho) Chinese supplier in recent years and I had some quality issues that as the installer, I get to eat.

So, that is my story and I'm sticking to it...

Ken--I have heard about the PD failures on this net--in fact I recall you had at least one. For a while there was a sale on so called refurbed units that people rushed to get and wound up having more issues with. This goes back close to 10 years if I recall. I vaguely remebering that you personally disected one. As far as the noise, I have experienced the fan noise on other peoples coaches. At the time, the fans were on or off. The IOTA has a variable speed fan that is almost silent. Maybe the newere PD's are as well.

My experience with noise is when I have lot of accessories running in the coach, then the fan comes on to cool the unit.
Live rubber mounts and a ventilated cabinet helps lot.
