Anybody towing a vw cabriolet? I found a deal on one and might pull the trigger. But i seen one site claiming 4 tires down should be limited to 50mph?

It is a 1990 manual.

I've never heard good things about towing a VW automatic. If this is a straight shift, others will comment.

Our '91 does fine . . . however - we use a dolly - we don't tow flat.

Sorry - I should have seen that it is a manual in the original post. We towed an '04 Jetta straight shift with no problems. VW doesn't take an official position on this. Check with some "off the grid" VW mechanics.

We tow a 99' VW Cabrio (5 speed manual) with no problems. We flat tow it and have a braking system installed, don't even know its back there.... I suppose that could be good or bad! 😜

I used a '91(jetta, not cabrio but they're similar)as a toad for 12k miles till the engine died. The death from age, not being towed. Normally at a ~~65 cruise. No problems.

my 98 is the biggest POS I've ever owned of the 50+ vehicles. period. Lots of simple bread and butter parts like door handles are NLA. Many simple tasks are nightmares.

just my opinion... prior to 93, most all VW's were pretty indestructible other then rust.

after 93, I would only buy a diesel VW, never one of their gas engines, or automatic trannys.

even though the owners manual says to not tow the older cabriolet 4 down more then 50mph or 50 miles. I have found that it should be perfectly fine to tow the manual tranny vw's of that age anywhere you want 4 wheels on the ground.

that was derived from a few mechanics, a trusted vw mechanic, and company that provides towing equipment. The thought for VW's stance on not towing, is due to it turning the odometer when towed, and just to keep them out of liability.

I am not sure if I am going to buy a towd this year yet. will see in the next couple weeks.
