GMC forum members,

When we were ready to leave Conroe, the horn on the coach began to honk when the steering wheel was being turned. I pulled the horn button out and drove the coach without further problems.

I have now figured out the problem. It seems that the Turn Signal Cam is broken which allows the wire off of the horn button to ground and sound the horn.

I located the replacement part ( Dorman 83232, Turn Signal Cam ) at o'reillys auto parts. This piece is made of plastic to allow insulation for the horn button wire and I think the plastic broke due to the steering wheel being slightly loose on the shaft.

Since I need to pull the steering wheel to install the turn signal cam, I thought that I would look up the torque specs on reinstalling the steering wheel.

I consulted the 1975 maint manual and it states that the nut for the steering wheel is torqued at 30 inch pounds. This seems to me to be quite low for this application.

Am I missing something?

30 in-lbs is 2.5 ft-lbs of torque. I don't see any need for a lot of torque at that point; just enough to keep the wheel on.

Larry in the 75 maintenance manual X7525, section 9-61 line 33. "torque steering wheel to 30 ft-lb."

30 foot/pounds sure sounds like a more reasonable number to me (than 2.5 ft/lbs). I know that my (aftermarket) steering wheel was loose when I bought my coach (it had a couple other things contributing to loose / vague steering, so my drive home through Los Angeles rush hour traffic was "interesting").

I know I tightened it to WELL over 2.5 pounds, and still had it loosen up later. I got a little more serious about snugging it down after I replaced the ignition switch, and it's been fine for lots of miles since then.

The short version: you want the nut holding the wheel good and tight. Errrr, that would be the HEX nut holding the wheel... Wink

Sounds about right at 30 fp. After that you should be able to remove the nut and need a puller to get it off. Later GMs sdded a safety snap ring to the end of the shaft

On page 9-63 the manual lists the torque at 30 which is a continuation of the previous page, 9-62, that has a header listing the torque in pound inches.

I didn't read the instructions on page 9-61. This makes more sense.

Looks like this part is a misprint.

thanks
