I can't get the Onan to turn over from the switch on the Onan or in the
coach. No click from either switch. House battery power is fine. There is
power to the relay that runs the Onan fuel pump.

Tad baffled here.

Thanks,

I would try to jump the large stud on the solenoid that goes directly to the starter with 12v to bypass eveything and check the starter itself. If it cranks, I would work backwards to see if the small stud on the solenoid activates it--I believe only one stud has a wire on it and it is a ground.

I would check your ground at both the Onan (back of the generator housing) and the coach. They get loose and corroded, and while they might be good enough run the fuel pump they can't handle the draw of the starter.

Len,

That's the kind of thing that convinced me years ago to find a replacement.
After the Generac 36G didn't work out well, I wound up with the TroyBilt.
Now my only problem is the neighbors -- they don't seem to appreciate its
reliability as much as I do: At Sun'n'Fun last week, a nice little Asian
lady parked behind us came over to ask if I'd please move our toad. Seems
she wanted it between them and the Troy-Bilt since passing traffic made the
noise come and go pretty dramatically. They were much more friendly after
I complied. The neighbors beside us, who relied on solar panels for
electricity, and cooked their meals in a solar oven, never seemed to warm
to the Troy-Bilt. Don't know why they were at an air show, complete with
the Blue Angels and an F-22 and almost continuous aircraft overhead.

Len,

A couple of thoughts - your Onan has an intermittent fault or "The Beast" has morphed into a Gremlin!

Still sounds like a bad ground to me. I'd clean them any way.

The last one I had like that was the +12 volt cable. Its feeds from the starter down to the bottom of the case then through through a feed through bolt and nut arrangement to another heavy cable on the bottom. It then goes on to the starting battery if I remember correctly. That connection at the feed through and cables had corroded and was not making a good connection. I believe that feed through bolt was brass.

This was several years ago at a work rally in Hamilton. It could be anything but positive cables tend to corrode more than negative ground cables and that connection on the bottom is exposed to the road contamination.

Check the positive cables and especially check at the feed through. I forget where the negative (ground) connection is to the Onan and how it is routed.

HI Ken, the DC ground is typically through one of the lower two tie-bolts that hold the generator section together. The cable lug is clamped against the aluminum end-bell of the generator...a great place for dissimilar-metals corrosion to occur.

From your description that also sounds like a good place to be checking.

This problem may not be cables at all. It could easily be the starter relay of any of the connections going to it.

Since it is intermittent, cleaning cable connections is a good place to start looking while waiting for it to fail again.
