I know this is a little out of place here
but
some tech magic is going on and I am afraid it will be lost
to GMC humanity
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6588-steering-box.html
I think Alex is the man who worked his magic at the rally ,
adjusting every GMC steering box in sight
but , -I AM NOT SURE-
I was not there and
i cannot find anything written about him or his magic tool
I only link to this stuff (nothing original here :>)
but
i stumbled across his pictures on FB with no way to link to them
( i am just a dumb computer jock)
and
he has developed a set of tools we all need access to -
so i posted his pix and hope to keep in touch with his technique
i would like to see him published on
on - GMCES, GMCWS, BDUB'S PHOTO SITE
so i can link to his work
keep up the great work, and good luck on the video

Gene,
You are correct Alex was the individual that helped a lot of people at the Montgomery Rally with their steering problems. However, I
don't think he adjusted the steering boxes; I believe he ALIGNED the steering wheel, CV joint, lower steering shaft, and steering
box input spline so that when the steering wheel was centered the wheels were pointed straight ahead and the steering box was on
center.
I was embarrassed by the fact that I thought had fixed Bill & BettyC's GMC steering problems by setting the correct tire pressure
when in reality I did not. When BettyC thanked Alex for doing so I wanted learn what he did that I missed. Turns out he had learned
something from Dave Lenzi that I hadn't been aware of regarding the alignment of the steering wheel, steering column, CV joint,
lower steering shaft, and steering box input spline.
I felt this was important and wanted to update the Steering Inspection on the GMCES website so I began corresponding with AlexF,
DaveL, PeterB, KenH, and CarlP to do just that.
I'm going to plagiarize Alex's photos and include them in the Steering Inspection on GMCES. ;-)

Rob M.

done yet?
this is a simple thing that we all should do.
does not require adjusting the steering box
just use the tool, and be ready for the next step
- something every one can do if they get/make this tool?

Nothing magic about it, actually. Just a lot of components with a lot of
opportunity to be misaligned. Some joints too loose and some too tight.
The "tool" is two pieces of bar stock and 4 magnets. (Alex fastened magnets
to aluminum bar) Their placement magnifies the relation between the flat
spot on the input shaft with the cover plate. Parallel indicates that the
steering box is in its "centered" position.
At the same time, the steering wheel should be locked in place with a long
stick and tie wraps, not the ignition switch key lock. Also, at the same
time, the wheels should be pointing straight ahead as you drove it straight
into position.
With all these in their correct position, you can now install the steering
shaft being careful not to move any of these 3 components.
They probably won't line up. Adjustments can be made at the steering shaft
flange, cv joint, slip shaft (make sure it slips easily), and / or tie rod
ends. An adjustable drag link is especially handy at this point.
Alex Ferrara adjusted and repaired several folks steering linkages at
Montgomery and has commited to doing it again at Wisconsin this fall as
well as giving a presentation on the subject. He intends to produce a
video with Glenn Gardners help to walk us through the confusing but
actually simple steps involved.
Alex is on a crusade to make every owner understand the importance of this
to the enjoyment of their GMC. The information will be public.

G'day,
Alex was kind enough to send me the photographs of what he does so I can update the Steering Inspection document on GMCES so I DON'T
have to plagiarize them! ;-)

Do any of these photos show the actual steering column with the splined ends, the slider, the u joint and the cv and their correlation with each other? I believe mine are off. Thanks to all who put so much untangibly rewarded time into trying to keep these wonderful beasts rolling.
