Lurking because I don't have a GMC yet. However, my cousin is in the process
of buying one. And I came here months ago to learn about these things so I
could help him restore it.
My experience is with GM cars of all ages and styles, with a special love
for Corvairs. I've had every model and every body style.
Happy to assist with whatever I can.
Not lurking to troll. I admitted I did not read all the posts, and I
apologized.

Les is speaking for me.
Yes, Mike has the right of Free Speech. He won't be hauled off to jail for
expressing himself. Doesn't mean we have to just nod and put up with what
he has to say, or more importantly, how pompously he says it.
("It's Anti-Blocking System because I care to be correct!")
There are plenty of guys here who I don't agree with. I have nothing
against someone having an opinion and sharing it. Usually that is done with
a bit of tact. Some people don't have any idea what tact is and "just tell
it as I see it". In real life, most of us don't really like that guy much.
So I'm telling it like I see it, Mike. You're an ass.
If you were the last guy on Earth who could help me keep my GMC running we
wouldn't be friends in the Real World. We certainly won't be friends here
where the Internet lets you be even more clueless and anti-social.
Oh, and that's "Al the Heat Guy", Les. It's a name, right? Not one we've
ever seen here before, of course.
Again.. lurking in the Interwebs is easy.

I've know that for about 50 years since Jim Hall and the Chaparral and the Cobra Coupe and Ford GT-40 were kicking-ass on all that Euro-Trash. I have written numerous letters back in the 1970's and 80's to Car&Driver, Road&Track, Automobile, Motor-Trend and others complaining that quoting the CD and not calculating the drag was not doing their readers any good. At some point, they began quoting the CD and the drag.
Bob de Kruyff wrote on Fri, 11 April 2014 10:45 | ""Yeah, but when was the last your former employer, 'Government Motors' or any other manufacturer quoted the DRAG and not the coefficient of drag? The CD tells you how good the shape is, it's up to you to do more if you chose.
And those heavy duty trucks with both? Last time I looked a SuperDuty Ford was rated up to 22,000 lb gvw which is 10,000 more than the GMC Motorhome. And they aren't quoting CD either.
BIG difference""
Cd has become a great marketing tool and it does show how good a job you may have done in the wind tunnel. For all of the actual fuel economy and drag calculations, you have to use Cd X frontal area

Mike,
I have have a first name, PLEASE USE IT.
It is also very obvious to all of us how little respect you have for others. There have been atleast 6 different members here that have suggested that you be a little more polite and respectful. have you tried to respect their requests, NO
You have passed insults, foul language, and lots of other verbal abuse upon several people here, how is it that you think we are the ones doing wrong?
If you are so sure that you are done wrong by, then please take this discussion to the sandbox.

Les,
Just put him in the "Ignore all messages from this user" list. This way you do not even know when he posts something. I did this weeks ago so I have no idea what he did to trigger this thread and I really do not care.
Usually these types of postings are from someone who has an inferiority problem and he his saying "look at me, look at me".
Back to the GMC net.
|
I agree with both of you, but the problem is, we have let him go too far and nobody has officially reigned him in. Several of us have tried the polite approach of asking that he fit in and be a bit more respectfull. It hasn't worked. At this point, The only way to solve this is to get the moderator(s) involved, otherwise it will continue. Do we even have a Moderator that follows these events?
By putting him in the "Ignore User" list, you have solved your own problem but many others still get his offensive messages.
Other forums have put members like this on probation where all of their posts are previewed (and edited if necessary) before release. I know that takes additional involvement from the moderators. Perhaps it is time we implement something similar here when the situation calls for it. If it requires additional moderators, then so be it. In the interest of a more civil environment, I would be willing to donate some of my time as a moderator, I hope that there are others willing to do the same.

Has anyone ever counted the number of times or the number of people who
have asked Mike to leave the discussion group ? When you get 5 or more
people with the same opinion or thought process, perhaps there is something
to it !

While researching-- its what we PH.D students do.... lol I found a fan
(aftermarket) without a clutch but with fins that move to "neutral" based
on temperture much like a clutch would do.
Would such a fan be good for the GMC? just wondering out loud.

Here you go:
*http://tinyurl.com/l7dfq37 <http://tinyurl.com/l7dfq37>*
*While this paticular one is for BBC (Big Block Chevy) as this is what I
have; I am sure there is an application for Olds 403/455. This works
by temperature, the fan blades act as the clutch. Fan is also good for up
to 8,000 rpms, well beyond what an 455 should be doing. :) *
*ADVANTAGE: All the benefit of a fan with clutch, but less rotating weight
on the water pump shaft as the fan only weighs about 3 lbs versus closer to
10 for the stock unit.*

I wouldn’t dispute that this fan is lighter….
I wouldn’t dispute that it pulls more air….
But it appears the blades flatten as RPM’s increase!
http://www.flex-a-lite.com/18-inch-7-blade-flex-fan.html
I didn’t see anything mentioned about temperature “feathering” – Am I missing something? – Though I have considered using a Flex-A-Lite just for the weight savings.

A flex fan similar to that one came apart in a camper I had in the early 70's it really tore up my radiator ,those stainless blades can really slice up a radiator core quick. They were popular before the clutch fans appeared in vehicles.in my opinion the clutch fans are much better and also move more air.i wouldn't use one on my rig but I will say the OEM flex fans from the early 70's were constructed better then the after market ones.

The Flex-a-lite fans http://www.flex-a-lite.com/about-us/ have been around for a long time and have been used on high performance application for decades. I used to run one on our gasser that we ran years ago. They are not temperature controlled, but RPM controlled to flatten out at higher RPM to reduce load. They are probably not the best unit to run on our coaches as they move less air at higher RPM’s. See The fourth question down on the FAQ.
http://www.flex-a-lite.com/frequent-questions/
As for what I run on our coaches. I have run a hayden 2797 Serve Duty for a number of years and yes it does get noisy. I am presently running a 2747 clutch and it is somewhat less aggressive when it engages, but it works well. I run a 195 stat because of the MPFI that I run and it will hold that temp all day long even climbing in the mountains out west. I also run a Fan out of old diesel Pontiac and Cads of the early 80’s. Blades are a little bigger and the pitch is somewhat more aggressive.
The 77 & 78 coaches came with an air control package to direct the air coming in the grill thru the radiator. A number of netter here have built their own air control baffles to work as the factory baffles. Front air dam spoilers are beneficial also.

Unfortunately all of these threads have been cut and pasted to the point that it is hard to reflect who said what. But that's OK. It is very hard to argue with mis-information. The Tahoe had a GVWR of 7200#. The GMC has a GVWR of 12500#--a very different number. If you are going to throw numbers around, you need to realize that the gross vehicle weight plus what it is able to tow is called the gross combined weight rating GCWR. Normally I wouldn't worry about any of this mis-information, but if people are going to argue, they need to be up to the task. I was chief engineer for trucks and the Tahoe was considered a light duty truck. I was personally involved in the heavy duty cooling packages and the related mechanically driven fan packages.

is very hard to argue with mis-information. The Tahoe had a GVWR of 7200#. The GMC has a GVWR of 12500#--a very different number. If
you are going to throw numbers around, you need to realize that the gross vehicle weight plus what it is able to tow is called the
gross combined weight rating GCWR. Normally I wouldn't worry about any of this mis-information, but if people are going to argue,
they need to be up to the task. I was chief engineer for trucks and the Tahoe was considered a light duty truck. I was personally
involved in the heavy duty cooling packages and the related mechanically driven fan packages.

A good friend of mine decided to try a flex-a-lite fan on his 289 Hi-Po Mustang. It tossed a blade which cut a neat slot in the hood. After seeing that, i have been hesitant to recommend them for use on anything that will see revs over 4000. They also tend to be a bit noisy at higher revs.
