Ok, CFO asks, all this talk about fan clutches, how's ours...knocked wood didn't help.

Viscous coupling works, speeds up with engine start, slows down right after start...sounded like chirping, perhaps something hitting a blade, irregular rhythm.
Shut it down, reach in and turn blade by hand, no interference but notice some wiggle at the clutch...I'll have a new 15-4644 in the morning.

Maintenance manual says, remove seal retainer, roll back seal toward shroud, remove fan, blah blah...my seal retainer looks like it won't come out in one piece, looks, crunchy, rust. Is this something I ca just replace with metal strapping or something.

If your budget allows, the best thing to replace it with is a new two piece fan shroud:

It will make future work on the front of engine much easier, especially the bottom.

Sir: I remove the 4 bolts that hold the fan blade to the clutch then remove the 4 nuts that hold the clutch on the water pump. Remove the clutch and leave the fan blade in the shroud. Install in reverse order. You should not have to loosen the belts if you are careful.

If you like noise, you are going to love that 15-4644 clutch. I had one once, luckily the place I bought it took it back for refund. Then Delco Engineering sent me a free correct replacement one.

The Delco engineer said that clutch is for a 2" longer and 1//2" deeper pitch blade. Check the condition and especially the width of your belts while you are in there. The Delco Engineer I worked with on mine said the minimum spec on that 15-4644 clutch was two 1/2" wide belts. We have 7/16" belts. Many GMC people run them on their GMCs, so they do work.

Perfect, that what I was wondering. I kind of did that when I removed my engine through the top...
