When I first landed in LA in 1962 from NZ I couldn't walk around outside without my eyes stinging and watering. When I visit now the air is clearer and my eyes do not sting. Something has happened in the ensuring 40 years. Perhaps California legislators made some rules that helped, I thank them, or whatever made it happen.
Now scientists have suggested that the world weather is changing, some say its warming up, and some say its just changing. The Al Gore's of the world have been attempting to make political hay out of all this and blame those awful oil companies that want to dig up oil sands and pipe it down to Texas. Yet they all drive around in cars fly in planes (some of them private jets) and heat their buildings.
Meanwhile science marches on, and although the main source of energy will remain oil or gas for a long time yet, other sources are always being developed, Lithium Ion batteries being one of them. I intend to use the best system of storing electrical energy I can find.

Peter,
Your eyes don’t lie. The air quality is vastly improved since I was a kid. The EPA and California in particular, to my way of thinking, have been very successful in legislating lower emissions. For that matter the stench of low tide on the San Francisco bay is nearly gone. Water treatment, air quality regulations, heck even recycling has improved our lot even though we are in greater numbers than ever before. Mexico City, many big cities of China, and other places where smog controls are not as commonplace would burn your eyes and nose today.
I’m not going to debate science vs voodoo. Treading lightly on the earth can’t be a bad thing. Our GMC’s consume a lot of fuel and oil for the distances they travel. But the impact of building a new RV compared to using what’s already existing nearly makes us all charter members of the Sierra Club, or Greenpeace!
Alcohol in our gasoline, like the other additives legislated before, is bad for the environment when put in the tanks of old cars. Frankly farm legislation shouldn’t fill my tank. The sweetheart deals that are given to electric car buyers, however, is just a smart investment to get a promising idea to critical mass. If I drove to work I’d probably buy a Nissan Leaf for commuting until I can afford a Tesla! Those lithium batteries are making a difference, and we’ve just begun to develop big scale batteries.
I think nearly everyone here enjoys taking their coaches to unspoiled natural places. Forests, deserts, oceanside beaches, or by the lake, our coaches are a comfortable place with picture windows to enjoy what’s been for our eternity. One of the reasons I want to add fuel injection is to make the coach run better and more efficiently. The payback of the greater fuel economy will never be realized, but I think it’s the right thing to do, and a geek’s got to have his toys.
Your Canadian tar-sands can keep us in oil for a long time. Using it intelligently is just what we thinking beings must do.

Peter,
Interesting story, I have a few of my own.
I was gob smacked the first time I stepped off the plane in Christchurch, NZ in July of 1981. The air was laden with smoke from wood
burning stoves used to heat the homes. During the day you could see the smog.
In 1988 I took up a position at the Hamilton Standard Overhaul Facility in Long Beach, CA; I remember looking out the window as we
approached LAX and seeing the yellow cloud of smog. I said to myself; "I left Sydney for this?" :-(
In 1992 I flew into Beijing in February to meet with Air China. Before that meeting I visited the UTC offices on the 14th floor of a
building downtown. I thought it was a foggy day but the UTC executive I was meeting with told me that was smog generated by the high
sulfur content coal they burned for heating.
The air quality in Hong Kong got progressively worse when I lived there from 1991 to 1999 as more and more companies relocated from
Hong Kong to Shenzhen across the Chinese border. As I understand it China has anti pollution laws but no one enforces them or they
pay off the officials meant to enforce them!
I am of the opinion that sooner or later the WORLD will be powered by nuclear energy. It would be nice if solar, wind, wave, and
geothermal could do it but I doubt that will ever come to pass as societies need for power is ever increasing.

Soapboxes can be Your Friend.Â
The infrastructure needs to be developed, but once developed, a hydrogen energy economy makes a lot of sense... >if< the necessary photocells to crack water can be made without polluting everything in sight. It will take many many acres of them, but that's the only way to get the hydrogen cleanly. This lets us forestall the pollution of the planet until hest becomes a problem in and of itself.

Live in a bowl facing west into the prevailing westerly winds surrounded by mountains and what do you expect?...my sarcasm cannot be contained!!
100% agreement on Gore...he has made millions from 'global warming' but spends $4000.00 a month in utility bills in Tenn. and god know how much in his front beach mansion in California...add in his limos and private jets and his 'carbon footprint' is more in a day than mine is all damn year.
