Hi,
Just got back from 10 days on the road. We went from Anza in SoCal to Las
Vegas, then to Hurricane, Utah then to Moab, Utah, then to Flagstaff,AZ and
then home. About 1500 miles. Primary visitations were Zion National Park,
Arches National Park, Canyonlands and some off roading in Moab. The coach
ran very well. The change to Mobil 15-50 Synthetic seemed to give another 2
lbs of oil pressure from 42 to 44 on the SW mechanical gauge at 2500 RPM.
Seemed about 5 lbs higher at hot idle from 22 to 27 lbs. ???. We towed the
Tracker plus I had my Yamaha TW200 on a rear rack on the coach. A fairly
heavy load. Mileage was between 8-10 mpg. Gas in Utah was about $3.60 a
gallon but in AZ down to $3.12 in some places. The new A/C worked very well
although I had to adjust the belt in Moab. Can't say enough about the
aluminum radiator and HD fan clutch from Jim K. Amazing performance on some
pretty big hills.

I'm on the fence though about going to a lower final drive ratio. I'm able
to cruise at 65-70 at 2500 rpm with the 3:07 and if I get to a hill just
drop it into second gear. My sweet spot is about 2600 rpm for max torque. It
just pulls like a son of a gun at that rpm. Also, I'm thinking the new
Howell FI that I have in the box in my office just could become a very
expensive door stop as the Q-jet is running flawlessly even at 7,000 ft. Go
figure!!!!

Thanks,

Gary, I'm glad to hear you had a good trip.
You'll notice the differance when you go with the 3.55/3.70.

Gary,

My GMC is stored quite close to you now. I have a building in Temecula and the 75 Glenbrook is kept inside.

By accident I forgot about the final drive ratio when I replaced my transmission about a year and a half ago. My coach used to have 343 or something close to that. So when I had a rebuilt Manny transmission put in it came with a standard 307 final drive (You can't call it a rear end like I would normally do.). I like the 307 better than the higher ratio. It gets a little better gas mileage, runs quieter, and still climbs hills fine. I do not ever tow anything though so my GMC not taxed too much.

Bob,
Problem I have is to get it into it's sweet spot with my 3.07, I'm
having to look out for cops. No problem on hills or passing but at
70, it's still begging for a little more gas. I usually add a little
just for the fun of it just hoping the cops won't believe their radar
on a 30 year ole antique. So far, so good. Thinking of the 3.55.

Hi Bob,
Yes, I tend to agree with you. Not sure why everyone is so high on the lower
ratios.

If you were going to buy a new pick-up to tow a 5th wheel the factory
requires rear end ratios of 3.70 or 4.10 now we are driving with 10 to
12k all the time. I think that the factory has more engineering data
on what it takes to do the work required by a truck than we do. Food
for thought

I like the 3.70 gearing on my GMC with a 403 because I believe that it gets
it up a bit higher on the torque curve. I run 3000 rpm at ~65 mph. Works
for me. YMMV

Gary,

I have a similar set up with my '73 (KOBA 455, carb'd, and 307 final drive). It works for me here on the East Coast. I don't have but a few grades to climb and the temperature problems should clear up with the new HD fan clutch that I just bought.
I get a honest 10 1/2 to 11 mpg @ 60 - 62 mph with the engine turning 2400 rpm. She'll run that way all day long without pushing or burning oil. I don't tow.
In my younger days I had a '57 Nomad w/ a 411 rear that we used to tow modifieds to Nazerath Speedway. Great for towing but running too many rpms for me at 60 - 65 mph w/o a tow.
We all have different needs and expectations.
Just my two cents worth.

Jim,
If you do 60-62 at 2400, I must have a different rear, er, front drive
than a 3.07. At 65, I'm turning 2 grand on the tach. At 70, it's
around 2500 if I remember correctly. Might just have to do some
checking.

Roger,

That's what the Tach and Speedo reads. .....and I'f I remember JimK's chart that gives me a 307. I think the chart is on his website. If I can find it I'll get back to you here.

Roger,

I knew I had the chart here.

According to the chart:

with a 307 at 65 mph you should be reading 2470 rpm.
at 70 mph you should be reading 2660 rpm.
@ 60 I should be reading 2280 rpm. (my Sun tach may be
off a little or the speedo maybe off w/ Alcoas)

Found the chart but the 3.07 is no where close on speed and rpm
comparison. Maybe 2.41 or there abouts. May need to go to the salt
flats to find out. {:>)

Found this on the net:

These formulas are for giving you a good idea of what to expect not
100% accurate, but pretty close. Some things you need to remember is
that if your tire is 25" standing still it will be taller at speed.
How much depends on tire construction, rubber compound, inflaltion. It
will be shorter on acceleration depending on engine power, wheel spin.
Then you have tranny slippage and probably other small variables.

To figure rpm:
168 * gear ratio * mph / tire radius
To figure mph:
tire radius / 168 * rpm / gear ratio
To figure gear ratio:
tire radius * rpm / 168 / mph
To figure tire radius:
168 * mph * gear ratio / rpm

Mine still figured out near 3.07

Roger, I think you have way too much slippage in your torque converter or you have a very short set of tires. Run over and let me watch the tach while you drive it.

That's not right even for a 3.07. Standard tires run about 700
revolutions per mile. At 60 mph, that mile takes a minute. That's 700
revolutions of the wheel in a minute. Times 3.07, that should be 2150
RPMs, plus torque-converter slippage (maybe another 100 RPMs).

2400 at 60 mph is maybe a 3.42 final drive, if Jim has standard size
tires and his speedometer is correct. At those RPMs, a 3.07 should
push him along at 65. But if he's reading 62 on his speedometer, then
he may be going 65. That's exactly the inaccuracy of my speedometer,
as compared to GPS. Some precision is needed here.

I'm running about 2400 or 2500 RPMs running at 65 (true) with my 3.07.
Roger, if you're running at 2000 RPMs at 65, then you have a
2.something final drive. They did come in those ratios in Toros. But
if that was the case, it should only be 2150 at 70 mph. Engine RPMs
are linear with speed.

A preferred formula is to use 700 revolutions per mile for standard
tires. At 60 mph (and this should be true 60 mph--my speed reads 5%
low), read the RPMs and divide by 700 if you have standard tires (the
number of tire revolutions per mile if you don't). That's your
effective final drive ratio. There's an error because of
torque-converter slippage, too.
