Hello all, though I have been lurking for quite a while as I was looking for one, I signed up when I bought my Palm Beach. This search took about 7 months, and it ended on March 22 in South Carolina, close to Spartanburg.
When I went to look at it, the guy probably thought I was crazy when I started by sticking my head under and inspecting the frame. When I saw it was OK, I knew the hook was set.
We then looked over the outside as he was telling me about it and what he knew. The 16.5 tires were garbage with cracks wide enough to stick a coin into.
Inside the coach was intact, original and complete! OK, now I'm waiting for the other shoe to fall. Was the price a typo? A (very) short and low speed drive showed the engine runs great, the trans shifts perfectly albeit early, and the brakes feel very good.
A deal was struck, (so much for a typo) and he agreed to let it sit until I could obtain wheels and tires.
Sooo, yesterday we leave early with the new rubber and a butt load of parts and tools. I mean I had hoses, bearings, belts and more. I drove it 3 miles to the local Wal Mart (Thanks Sam!) and changed the tires and oil, greased the front and bogies. While changing the tires, I first found the RF bearing had some looseness, OH CRAP! Continuing, I also found the LR bearings needed replacing, so I did. I then (foolishly?) decided to drive home easily. It took a long time, but the only problem we had was a loose alternator belt and I had to replace the fuel filter. I feel very blessed!
What a day!
This forum was a big part in my preparation, so to all a hearty THANK YOU!

Christopher,
Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum
I am glad you were paying attention. You did well.
Now, please do us that might provide specific advice and direction a small favor. It looks like you are reading the forum, but that doesn't matter. You need to put together a sigfile that has your real name (Chris(topher) Xxxxxx), a short coach summary (7X Palm Beach) and a geographic reference (Fayetteville, GA) so those that may help know what is being dealt with and if you are in striking range of hands on assistance. There are important model and year variations.
While I don't hope to see you in Chippewa Falls, try to hook up with the Dixie Landers as soon as you can. You are 300 miles from Bean Station, but if you trust the coach that much by then, it would be completely worth the weekend. Just be sure to let the people in charge know that you have no idea what is happening and what is expected of you.
You will soon discover that you are a member of a special group. The only thing like that I know is the watermen that I lived most of my life among. That is why I like to welcome new owners much as a new owner or vessel would be welcomed into that close community. So,
May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth withing her.
Welcome Christopher.

Christopher,
You must somehow be posting only to the Forum, not the email list, because
I didn't see your introductory message.
I'm a 16-year GMCer in Americus, so I may be a useful resource for you. In
fact, with a daughter in Stockbridge, I pass your way quite frequently.
There are 4 other GMCers even closer to you than I am, all of them great
guys and technically proficient. You could hardly be in a better location.
DO join Dixielanders. www.gmcdixielanders.org has the application.

Thank You for the warm welcomes!
I am going to look into Dixielanders.
Maybe when I retire (15 years) I can start
doing gatherings, unless one is close.
Being self employed anything more
than a weekend is hard to come by.
And even then a whole weekend is not very common.
Email list?
I didn't know this was a Email based forum.
I will look into that as well.
I do look forward to meeting some folks here and putting
faces with names.

Do not bother. From what I understand, Patrick (the email list admin), will take care of that problem Ken had and you need to do nothing.
There is a parallel linked email list and when the first posting arrives from a new user at the email server it is not sent out the email users automatically. The email admin will catch the problem and fix it. At least that is what he was doing in the past.

Yep. Patrick missed it and it took another post before I found and added
Chris to the list. It's marked as "nomail" so that he will not be inundated
unexpectedly.
Welcome to the asylum, Chris.
