Are you talking a 550 Spyder?

Matt Colie wrote on Sat, 05 April 2014 13:27

My Spyder was a fun car, but I don't want it back.
I got cheap because the seals were gone. All the manuals available were in German (no problem there). So, bought it, got a seal kit, not sold as a kit, you had to order each and every part. Took the engine out, knocked it apart and put in new seals and spark plugs and sold it to pay for the next semester. The biggest problem was that many areas of the US east coast had demand traffic lights that were tripped by a treadle in the road and the car was too light to trip them. If I needed the light to change (always - there was no right on red law then), I had to get out and jump on the treadle.

No, I don't recall any numbers attached. It was just a cabriolet version of a Prinz, but with the near 60PS motor against the 30 of the Prinz and the lighter weight, the thing was like a little rocket. Just don't shift below 6K.

Come to think of it, Fiat had a 550, but Prinz was nearer 600.

I had 224,000 on my 89 RX-7 When I got rid of it, still pulling strong
to 7000 RPM.

The 550 Spyder I was asking about was the Porsche 1200 lb race car like the one james Dean died in.

Wasn't the "original" Fiat 500 engine just 500cc? Did it get named or nicknamed "Toppolino?"
I seem to remember both it and the Fiat 850 had Abarth editions/versions when I was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany from 67-71.
I had a 1968 Fiat 124 Spider then which was a lot of fun. I wish Fiat would bring back an updated and improved version! Mine had a 1438cc engine.

The 850 spyder and coupe sold in this country  in 1968 and later were actually reduced displacement to 817 ccs.  This because the reduction removed them from the requirement of smog certification.  Fiat then added the Abarth stuff to them - manifolds and a different cam -to get the power back.  If they'd had to smog them at the late 60s state of the art, the little things probably wouldn't have moved.  One friend hade the coupe, another the Spyder.

John might have been referring only to the sequential turbo ones. Charley Ledford down in Charleston had a 93 or 94 that he tested the limiter on every time he drove it. Said it was the best high performance car he ever owned....and he has owned M-6 BMW's, M-5 BMW's, Ferrari's, 911's and a host of others. He beats hell out of them all and he said he never could break the RX-7.

I wish they would bring it back.

I sold my '75 Fiat Spider with dual dellortos on a waffle manifold to buy my GMC, I guess I was done tinkering and needed a new project.

Very nice, Sean. My 68 was British Racing Green with Camel (tan) upholstery. I had added fog and driving lights plus a high intensity red light on right rear bumper for fog warning on the autobahns!

I think the main issue is emissions. There are too many "dead areas" for unburnt mixture to hide, That's been a majot focus of piston engine design--to the point that the rings are dangerously close to the top of the piston.
