Does Your Gasoline Contain Ethanol?

Using a tall clear container (with a sealing lid), fill it about 1/10 full of water and mark this level on the container. Fill the rest of the container with gasoline, cover it and shake well. Allow a couple of minutes for the mixture to settle and check the apparent water level against the mark. If the water level has risen above the mark, the ethanol has been drawn into the water. If it stays the same you have ethanol free gas.

I'd like to know where it is still possible to buy gas without ethanol, other than at the airport or maybe a marina. We just returned from a 2,300 mile trip to Florida and back to Michigan. During the trip I searched but could only find one place that advertised that they had pure gasoline. When I got there they were out and had been out for a couple of weeks.

Have a look at http://www.pure-gas.org/
I scope out every trip and set the GPS to the gas stations.  SW Tejas and California are deserts.  Since I don't do California, it's moot.  My annual foray to San Antonio requires a fillup at the last gasp, and running back past Hopuston on crud, so I return early in the morning.

Hi

You could check this site, they list a bunch of stations that are reported to have ethanol free gas.
http://pure-gas.org/

A lot of premium gas is ethanol free, Shell Canada Gold for example.

I've tried http://pure-gas.org/ before and actually went to a couple stations in my area. In vain as it turned out. It seems like they are always out of pure gasoline. I have not tried a marina, but it seems like it would be a hassle to pull up to a boat dock in my GMC to buy gas. Our airport has 100LL for $6.43/gal today. I don't think I want to pay that just to get ethanol free. My point is that I find it difficult to find a station conveniently located in my area where pure gas is available. I don't know about premium. I thought Shell was OK until I tried to buy some and found (my testing and sign on the pump) that it was not ethanol free.

Richard,

You'll just have to move to a better climate. We have several places in
Americus (pop. 17,000) advertising ethanol free. The one I use has never
been out, but it's usually $0.20-$0.30 per gallon more expensive -- which
is worth it to me.

While I don't make any special effort to seek out pure gas, I do frequently
see it along the way as I travel the SE. And there's a LOT of corn grown
down heer -- especially in the last 10 years.

The content is maintained by the public. Per their web page:

"Please remove stations that no longer sell pure gas, even if you didn't post them! But please don't remove stations simply because they don't sell to autos – many folks use this site to find pure gas for their boats and planes."
