Should my gauges be on when the ignition is turned off ?? , Gas , oil pressure & temp are still on when the ignition is off & key removed , haven't noticed it before & my battery is draining ??
Thanks in advance !! Razz

How old is your ignition switch? 1st place I'd look.

I just looked on the GMC wiring diagram and the power to the gauges does trace back to the ignition switch. So probably the switch is bad or the key lock assembly on the steering column is worn an not pulling the rod to the switch all the way.

Harry,

Are the gauges REALLY powered on or are you thinking they are powered on because the pointers don't go to zero when the key is turned off?

The pointers of GM gauges of that era do not go back to zero when the power is switched off, unlike the Ford and Mopar gauges.

I think the easiest way to see if they're really still powered up would be to watch the oil pressure gauge. On my GMC the oil gauge runs about a pointer width over the 1/4 mark at hot idle. Switching off the ignition and the pointer stays at about 1/4. Switch the ign back to run (not starting the engine) and the pointer goes to zero. I would think that if your oil gauge goes to zero when the engine is first switched off then the gauges really are still powered on.
