Looking at the dometic 310. seems to be a nice china toilet for the price. I actually am kicking myself for letting a new one off craigslist go to a friend. But they had zero toilet, and they are money strapped and it is their first motorhome.
is there any difference in the dometic vs. sealand? they look the same.
what does one look for in a toilet. other then china?

Do you mean before you use it or after. (The devil made me say that.)
The valve mechanism is about the only thing that will give you trouble, so a fool proof valve setup is vital. Ball valve is better than a slide valve. Next, look at the height. Most of us don't care for a really low one.
Mine is an older Aqua-Magic (I think), that has never given any trouble at all, seals tight (holds water in it after a flush), and the water sweeps the whole thing well. It came with a spray hose for cleaning, but that is useless. Mine is great for sittin' and thinkin'.

Mine has a nearly new Dometic 310. The biggest flaw IMO - the "plug-in valve" has a frost sight near the water entry, that will dump water all over the floor when it lets go.
How do I know? At some point over the winter - the one in my coach cracked near the frost sight and when the water is turned on, it pumped water ALL over the floor. After a while, the seller realized things were getting wet - but it was *very* wet by then. It wasn't until I tried the pump again and investigated, that I realized where the water was coming from. I don't know if it's a weak by the valve or it actually did freeze (unlikely according to the seller).
If you go the Dometic's manual - there is a section with pictures reminding you that it isn't covered by the warranty.
A bad design in my books. I'll be carrying a spare valve from now on - "just in case".

I seen that about the freezing valve. but i would think that you could have that on anything that freezes. pipes, valves, whatever will crack and leak water all over.
It looks like if you winterize as I do, with rv antifreeze. you should not have to worry about that valve letting go. the winterizing step of draining toilet down was way too many steps.
I am changing out the black tank, so I will have the toilet out, so that is why I was thinking of changing to a new toilet. @$150 or less, it seems like a nice toilet. and I hear lots of compliments about a china toilet for the women folk. I have to do a little keeping up with the times, because we have a few friends with some newer campers, and I have to make sure the wife understands how much better the gmc is built.
seems like an easy upgrade, and get alot for the extra $150 on this project.

Jon,
I replaced the Thetford Recirc toilet with a Sealand 510 after the first summer we owned the coach. I think Sealand was bought by Dometic and the 310 is similar to the Sealand we have. It has been a very good improvement. I have had to replace the flush cartridge one time (last summer) because it started to leak water into the bowl. Otherwise, no issues. The 'bone' color was almost a perfect match for the wet bath.

I was worried that the valve cracked due to the tension on the supply line (or the supply line "snap" that is mentioned with this toilet) rather than freezing.
Being in the "Great White North" (albeit a very green part of it) - I'll be winterizing with anti-freeze. But the seller was in the south coast of Oregon, apparently stored inside.
One place here wanted close to $100 for the valve! Luckily I found a place a block a way that sold it for $40.
My wife likes the idea of the china toilet - but I'll be keeping my eye on that valve...

I don't know if it will work on your toilet, but on all of the toilets
we have had in our 2 GMCs and the SOB, if you lift up on the foot valve it
lets water in without opening the ball valve. Anyone else have a toilet
that works like this?

Yes, my Sealand works that way. It is a quality unit that also has the hand spritzer for those "difficult" jobs
I see that Dometic has the identical unit. Did they buy Sealand?

They should have #1 and #2 settings to simplify things LOL
The spray nozzle can be added to any setup, and are very handy.
Ceramic holds up better and is easier to clean. Ball valve is more reliable.
I really used to hate toilet jobs when I was a service tech. Slide valves especially.
With that said I have currently a functional plastic slide valve unit. When it goes south, guess what I will be instaling? And at almost 6'8", it will be a tall model.

I was going to comment on that as well - until I recalled that my wife received zilch for Valentines Day...
Hard to say if she would consider a new toilet better or worse than nothing!
