There are many coolers out there. Size is based on GVW, and if you have a radiator cooler, or not. You need a cooler that is twice the size if you aren't using a radiator cooler at all.. Then there's the case of how to plumb it. Some think that the fluid should go threw the extra cooler before it goes into the radiator cooler. In this case. And this depends on the amount of BTU's removed by that extra cooler. You can have the radiator cooler warming the fluid back up some as the fluid passes threw the hot water in the radiator. Some say the fluid should pass threw the radiator cooler first to remove as many BTU's that you can. Then use the extra cooler to bring the fluid temp down even more. The last method will remove the most BTU's. Then there is the thought that in cool weather. This last method will remove too much heat. Thus your trans can't warm up. You need to do what sounds right to you. I look at it this way. Heat kills transmissions. You hear this a lot from those
in the trans rebuild business. And the people that are setting along side the road as they tried to climb the mountain too fast. That's why there are trans coolers sold out there. Don't see too many transmission warmers out there. In my business. I had a lot of pick ups that pulled trailers a lot. During the winter months. Temp's could get to -20, to -30 degrees below 0. Even with that extra cooler after the radiator cooler. The transmission warmed up, and worked fine. The thing you need to think about is. Are you using your GMC mostly in heat, or in the cold. And what are you trying to accomplish. My 403 powered 78 Royale pulls a 24ft enclosed trailer with a car in it at times. Gross weight can get to just under 20,000 lbs. Been in the Southwest in the summer at over 110 degrees with that load. Been up to the Eisenhower tunnel West of Denver at 11,000 ft in the summer pulling a trailer. And yes. It was a slow trip to the top. But I got there. I have had no transmission
issues. I do have one of Jim K's 3:70 final drives.Bob Dunahugh
