The steel wheel are great for the people that are just getting into GMC motorhomes. It helps to keep the expense down until they decide to keep. Or sell. New steel rims run from $50, to $65 each. Used are around $25 each. Used. You don't have to blast them. Clean them up. And paint the new, or used rims the color you like. That's $10 at most. As for tires. You can get fairly new used tires at salvage yards for not a lot of cash. I told someone last year to do the used tire, and rim idea. He ended up with a set of 2 year old tires, and older rim for just under $400 total. Beats the $2600 for aluminum rims, and new tires for the people that are new to these GMC's. Use them for two years. Then you can sell them for about what you bought them for if you want to spend the money then for new alum rims, and tires. As for the fit on the front of the GMC. 5 minutes with a grinder solves that clearance issue on both sides. Anyone that wants some photo's of where to grind. I'll e-m
ail you the photo's. I talked to Dave Pottebaum today. The rims that he, and I got are for 1985 Chevy, and GMC 1 ton dually. You use the lug nuts from your GMC. Problem solved.

Bob,

You're correct IF the GMC is in the USA.

I'm trying to find a company that sells new 16" wheels for guys that have GMC's in Australia (or another country overseas) that
can't do what you've noted below.

Bob D has explained the scenario I'm in. I couldn't swing a new front end AND new aluminum wheels and tires. I bought new steel wheels from MW Wheel in Des Moines, IA using the specs from the ALCOA sheet Rob M posted a while back. I also told them that the wheels should be a mid 80's application so they looked up an 85 or 86 one ton Chevy. The part number I posted X-45329 fits the spec's I gave them. I have purchased 7 of them. There will be no grinding required since I have converted to the one ton front end. My plan is to buy two new 16" tires for the front wheels and work my way back. I'll let you know how it goes.

Bob,

If you will email me some pictures of that grinding work I will post them to the photo site.

It looks like you are an email list subscriber, so my address should be in this message. Let me know if its not.

BOB,

FYI - I thought i share with you and others what I went through last week.

As you know I'm trying to drive a 73 26' GMC in CA back east.

I hate to use and hav eto buy new 16.5" tires. I would rather buy and keep 16" tires and rims for the long haul.

Last week I called around to junk yard near Tuolumne, CA.
BTW - it was the 5 yard I tired...

I finally found one who says they have the rims I need.
However, they want $50 per rim for used rims.

IF and I say "IF" the ones I found at Southwest Wheels are the right ones - I would be much better off buying them for my time and money.

Now I wait to see what Rob's friend in the USA finds out when he goes to Southwest to test fit some rims.

My fingers are acrossed that the rim # I posted, in the other thread, will work.

Tony (Ontario Canada)
Marie and I are blessed to have had a 2nd chance to buy our farm.
Still hoping and more importantly praying to be able to build a garage.
Our 1970 Ultravan #520 has an Olds Toronado 455 in back.
