We today crossed the 3000 mile mark on our winter swing from southern Oregon to Mexico and back with around 600 miles left to get back home - in no hurry! When we left I said I would report on the use of the Archoil ethanol fuel additive. Each fill up on this trip has been at either Costco or a name brand station (most often Chevron). I have used only the standard grade and added the recommended amount (or a bit more) of Archoil additive. There is still some left in the bottle so I think I am somewhere in the ballpark on quantity.
What can I say? No hint whatsoever of vapor lock even though we have driven over a number of mountain passes (6 percent or greater and up to 4000 foot mean climbs) and in some very hot weather and in some bad traffic. We have yet to shift into second gear while never allowing vacuum to go below 4", or water temp to go above 200, or speed to drop below 55. No pinging with the static distributor timing at 10 degrees just as Dick P. Sugested. And, get this, we have yet to turn on the aux pusher electric fuel pump. All the driving has been on the stock mechanical fuel pump. We do have a large fuel filter on the outside of the fuel rail (a standard part of jimK's electric fuel pump kit). There are shields between the 3"exhaust pipe and the fuel tanks and we do use one of JimB's insulated lines running from the mechanical fuel pump and the stock carb. Nothing else special.
I will calculate fuel use when we get home so I can calibrate the ODO to get a good handle on MPG. Regardless of what that turns out to be I am a believer now and will use this stuff and only standard grade from brand name stations from now on. While only subjective and very prone to placebo effect, I can also report that the Onan runs better and quieter than ever before.
