Nascar uses tape over the grill. Volt closes off the rad. when on electric mode. The new Colorado and Canyon has them. When the Airforce was trying wing coulpling(before in flight refueling), they tried them on the fighters to reduce drag. (before disaster struck, one fighter flipped on to its back when the autopilot was switched on,killing all). Wondering if closing off 3/4 of the rad opening when the air is cool if it could reduce drag??? Wonder how much in % it could help. Wondering if I could find an old storm door to salvage the linkage??? Wondering where I'd find the time. Can't hardly use the GMC now much less work on it! just dreaming of being retired,,,,,,PL

Paul,
The real purpose of shutter off the grill is to reduce the airflow through the engine box. NASCAR people put tape on the grill to move the "separation zone" that divides what air goes over or under the car. This might have an effect of the CD of a Volt, but anything larger, you get back to the block coefficient. In the GMC case, I don't think you will accomplish anything.

If you look in my photos you will see an album called Hole grill or something. I had made a nice stainless grill using perferated polished stainless. It looked great, ahd about 45% open area, so about the same as stock just a different pattern.
on an 85 degree day on the highway at 50-60 the fan would come on.
I switched to an expanded metal material for the grill and no more engine fan.
I believe the wind piled up against the hole grill and couldn't get through due to the small holes. this really suprsed me since modern trucks seem to work fine with that style grill.
None the less, I don't think you want to be reducing airflow through the engine bay on these things. I want to add the air dam even to get more air in.
