The guys on the "Car Fix" TV show tossed a bigger 4 cylinder into a Samurai. It boosted the horsepower from 60 to 120 using a more modern Suzuki engine. They used a kit from Suzuki lightning conversions.
This episode first aired on 5/26/12 so it's nothing new but it looks pretty simple.

There is also a site that covers repowering with a VW 4 cylinder. Very common engine. I have only seen this on the web, so your mileage may vary.

There is a ton of information out there to do this.

The easiest it to put an 8 valve 1.6L Sidekick engine into it.
The next easiest is to put a 16 valve 1.6L Sidekick engine in.
Then it just gets a little harder.

I know people that have done both those swaps.
I frequent this board a lot...

I bought my Sammy from the guy in Marshalltown,Ia. Impressed with his work and his shop. He has put big engines in the Sammy's even a V8 as I recall. Mine has a Weber but still ......60 mph is the sweet spot, when you get there. Love my Sammy though.

They are so light that they must make a perfect toad. The ride must be hard on the backside, though. These “Lightning” fellows in Florida have a kit to poke a GM V6 in the hole. Unless you live in California...
