This MIGHT be a good prospect for Onan replacement for someone willing to
do something like I did. $529 with electric start will be hard to beat.:

Here's my similar TroyBilt, which is still working better than my Onan or
Generac ever did:

Ken,

I thought of your installation when Rob suggested it.

The generator Owner's Manual doesn't list the running rpm (at least I can't
find it), but the 420cc Predator engine specs list it at 1800 +/- 50 rpm.
Ken do you recall what your APU rpm is? Just curious.

I have the Onan 6000 in mine now, but that doesn't stop me from looking for what I might need next.

I read with interest about Ken's Troybilt conversion. It looks interesting. The downside is the noise issue. That stated, the Onan is in the generator compartment, INSIDE of a metal box. I have to think that that metal box contains a lot of the noise, and if Ken had enclosed his Troy, he would be hearing a lot less engine.

I think if I do a conversion like that, I will be putting the workings inside of a metal enclosure, inside the generator compartment. With the right kind of fan, it should be feasible.

The Harbor Freight Predator generators advertise how quiet they are, and have their single cylinder horizontal to the crankcase rather than vertical. Other than being Chinese, they look like they might work. I would probably choose the 6500 model or less.

The 6500 version is $50 cheaper, but the outside dimensions are listed as
the same, AND it doesn't have electric start.

Well, 1,800 RPM is quieter than 3,600, but that troybilt must still be loud as hell and vibrate a lot?

If the predator runs at only 1,800, then with sound blimping, it might be a contender.

Anyone want an EV4010 with 80 Hours on it? It's too big for my trailer, going to portable Honda's...

I'll be using it one more time this month, then probably selling it.

Guy,

The Onan does run at 1800 rpm. My Troy-Bilt runs 3600. I didn't notice
the Predator's RPM; if it really is 1800, that would be a big plus, IMHO.

No, my Troybilt is probably little louder than the Onan it replaced -- or
my hearing has continued to decline. And vibration is less. We don't use
it an awful lot, usually during mid-day stops, but it's been more reliable
than the Onan, by far, and the noise is not at all objectionable.
