I am here in San Antonio Texas in the guestroom Steve and Mary Ellen H. On
my own dime, I have attended a conference to learn a new practice area of
the law. Specifically, suing debt collectors! :-) so if anybody has
received collection letters or is being harassed on the telephone or
anything like that let me know! I have to pay off the student loan somehow!
:-) there can also be up to a $1000 penalty paid from the debt collector to
the client for violations and I can get attorneys fees.

The training is in San Antonio Texas, and Steve and his lovely wife were
kind enough to put me up in their guestroom so that I didn't have to pay
for a hotel room. They also fed me which was a real bonus. I am full of
good Texas cooking and am fat and happy. :-)

Steve showed me around his GMC which was apparently an old Classco
conversion. He has a album with some old pictures of what appears to be Jim
Bounds working on this coach or another one.

I hope that I can return the favor to Steve, perhaps on his next trip to
Talledega to the races, my driveway would make a nice halfway point, they
could stop at our place and sleep and shower and rest before heading on the
rest of the way.

Some of my Pontiac buddies wanted to see me since I'm in Texas, but after a
long weekend of training in a very complicated area of the law, and with a
12 Hour Dr. ahead of me, I just want to get started and head home in the
morning.

I commend you on the direction of your career.  Perhaps you could post some simple means of documenting these people whan they call?  Particularly when you have no outstanding dept but may live where a past debtor lived; or have a similar name.

Now,

If someone could tell me how to make the "you can have lower interest on your credit cards" stop calling. (Press 2 to be put on our "do not call" list doesn't make any difference at all.

Matt: Is that call to your cell phone? If so, it's probably a TCPA

Robin,

No, they have all been to the house land line and that number has been on the "Do Not Call" list forever and gets renewed regularly. The calling number is often spoofed and If you wait for a human and ask what the actual name of the company is, s/he hangs up instantly.

I have been putting up with a robot calls every morning at 9:06 AM for someone who does not live here. The robot says: "Press 1 if you are XXXX, otherwise press 2." When you press 2 it just reruns the same press 1 message over and over again. It is from a changing spoofed number usually an 800 number. If you call those 800 numbers they are invalid. One time they spoofed a number for a cafe in Montreal. I quit answering 9:06 AM calls so the robot changed to 10:06 AM. After ignoring those 10:06 calls for a while, the robot changed to once an hour starting at 9:06 AM and continuing all day from different spoofed numbers.

Then I got a letter in the mail for that person. I wrote on it: "Return to sender. All future mail to this address for this person will be trashed." I threw it in a USPS mailbox. So far nothing new has happened and the robot went away for now.

I did one time get a live person calling and when I said "XXXX does not live at this number: they immediately hung up. The robot continued to call.

I have not figured out what is with the 6 minutes after the hour times and also why they only call during the day on Mondays through Fridays. Most people would be at work during those times.

Not the sort of people who wind up with lots of debt collector calls, or
get passed around on lead generation lists as gullible "live ones."

When I receive a cold call, I usually answer the phone, talk to the
person very briefly, and ask them to hold the line, while I press the
hold button. So far, Vodafone has been the longest to stay on the line
(1hour and 35minutes iirc)...

My phone allows me to capture the calling number and place it in a list of numbers that are lead to believe the phone is busy. I admit that it does not work with unlisted or private numbers, but does stop those firms who only have a few numbers. My list is up to 78 phone numbers.
I also will not answer unlisted or private numbers or anything out of the ordinary. I really only answer numbers that are on my personal phone book. All others, I check out and generally banish to "no answer hell."

Tom,

Sure glad I have yet to try and call you from Sydney to let you know that I'll email you to organize a call.

When I want to call someone in another country I call a number here in Sydney and that connects me to system that allows me to call
the USA (and other countries) for a $0.50 per minute.

According to people I have called my number shows up as "unknown" or something else weird.

I had a friend that taped such a letter to a brick that had been wrapped in butcher paper and deposited it at USPS. Not giving legal advice, for sure. Just having fun with evil thoughts.

By the way. The same guy wrapped a very nasty cat litter pan in "Happy Birthday" wrapping paper and left it on a park bench.

Robin, we enjoyed the visit and you're welcome back any time.

Since you were here I've been in touch with Jim Bounds. It turns out he's not the person in the photo album. Jim provided some interesting background on the coach I call "Whoosh", but used be be known as "James".

According to Jim, I have the first coach built for Tony Bell, the owner of Clasco. That was 1989. Jim worked for Circuit City at the time and was involved in building the audio system of this coach. "James" was built as Tony’s personal coach with no plan to start a business, but it became the Clasco show coach and is the one pictured in the sales brochure. Jim credits this coach as the start of the GMC restoration idea. I guess you could say I have the Clasco prototype.
