I have officially joined the fraternity, yesterday I purchased a 1978 Royale Rear Bath GMC.
It is bare on the inside, and ready for refurbishing. The motor and trans are in good shape, the trip home, about 80 miles, went without a hitch. Alcoa's all around including the spare, and lots of spare parts. It has an awning, but the cover will have to be replaced. This will be a long term project, but I look forward to the process.
Anybody in the San Antonio area, that has some advice or tips, I am all ears.

Randy,
Welcome to the group/family/cult/asylum....
You came to the right place. It is a good thing that you said upfront that it is a Royale (Coachman build), because there are differences, but there are also people here that can tell you exactly what those differences are and mean.
Do you have the manuals? If no, they can all be downloaded at http://www.bdub.net/GMCLinks.html Then, when you need answers (and you will), you will know the correct names for the parts you are dealing with.
Montgomery is probably a 4 hour drive for you, but it would easily be worth a couple of days to get to see what all goes on. Just after we bought the coach, we got to spend the day at the last day of a rally. Big Mistake. We should have blown off the Friday business meeting and gone to the rally. (Thanks again Emery)
Finally, I realized when I got in with this crowd that it was much the same as the watermen that I have know all my life. So, I decided to paraphrase the way a new owner or vessel is greeted in that world. So,
My the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.
Welcome Randy
Hope to see you at Montgomery.

Congrats Randy. You got one of the best floor plans imo.
You will really do yourself a big favor if you can make it to the Montgomery GMCMI rally in a couple weeks. You'll see more coaches, options, and products than you ever be able to see in one place...well at least without going to another GMCMI rally and you're not going to get much closer than Montgomery. Plus you'll get to meet a ton of knowledgeable folks and get a ton of great ideas.

Short drive from S.A. To Conroe. Drive over Saturday morning, tour coaches, spend night in area motel, visit your new GMC friends, drive home Sunday. Only thing I would add is bring significant other.

Congrats and another new owner here! I get to move from lurker to owner!
I picked up my GMC in Eugene, Oregon on Sunday - the seller came across from the coast to meet me. I got in and drove it back the 350ish miles to Victoria, BC - it ran great!
Many mechanical upgrades done (EFI, quad bags with wireless, 1 ton front-end, etc...), just needs some roof sealing and interior finishing...

Welcome! The advice I would give is this. The GMC community is not a judging group. Folks show up in rigs that could make you drool and folks show up with primer and who knows what inside. No one cares. So start attending GMC rallies. A fixed date trip will spur you into action to get the water working better or the stove or the refrigerator. Start enjoying before it is "ready".

Randy,
Congrats on your new coach and welcome to the site.
Tony (Ontario Canada) Marie and I are blessed to have had a 2nd chance to buy our farm. Still hoping and more importantly praying to be able to build a garage. Our 1970 Ultravan #520 has an Olds Toronado 455 in back.

George,
Your advice is certainly true. I've never been as badly harassed by GMCers
as I was at GMCMI, Marion, NC in the Fall of '98 when I'd just bought the
GMC in May and had it completely gutted. I got NO sympathy from anyone
when we showed up in our ''97 40' pusher instead of the decrepit GMC: "...What
do you mean, depriving us of the opportunity to see the innards of a
coach?..." "...We don't care if you'd have had to sleep on the floor..."!
Few coaches receive as much attention as the one Paul and Nancy Doane have
been refurbishing for a couple of years. The total absence of walls,
furniture, dashboard, etc., doesn't slow them down at all. :-)

Thanks!
Yes - I had the Black List with me for the drive back, just in case... I stopped briefly in Wilsonville - but I doubt I'll be able to get there in May.
I was watching the upcoming Victoria meet - but then realized it was "without GMC's"! That's no fun!
