Lots of scams out there.
Caller id can be spoofed. Found that out this week at work when people were recieving odd/prank calls from each other. We must have a disgrunteled employee that has our phone list. Found a website offering this service.
Also public service announcement for today. No one will call you up to fox your computer. So if you get a call from someone saying your computer is broke and wants to help you fix it. Even saying from microsoft. Hang up phone.
Know 4 or 5 people that got that call in the pAst few weeks.
Lots of scams out there, so be wary.

If it is the State Attorneys Office, they probably are looking for the State's share of any taxes a business would have, like proceeds from sales on Alternator Protection Cables, etc. California is trying to get money any way they can.
Edit: This is what I want referring to:

Got maybe 6 last week. A+ goes to the faux Netflix troops, A- to the 'Windows Tactical Team'. Everyone else is mediocre at best.
Scammers at the door (we get those occasionally) are told come to the side at the fence. She or we sashay out the back with BWDs and usually suggest across the fence above the racket, "I don't think he likes you. Hit the road." After which we >always< call the Sheriff. The Deputies up here seem to enjoy routsing itinerants.

Well, maybe yea and maybe nay, but it would show a number from that Office. All the lines leaving our facility will report the main number on caller ID, courtesy f the telco. Thus our folks can outcall from one of the unlisted numbers without compromising it. Like us, the State's Attoprney probably has numbers they'd rather hide. The would report the main number (not a cell phone from a State away)

No need. The area code is a cell phone in California. A call from the Oregon state attorney's office wouldn't display any number other than the one from which the call is being placed.
My guess is the guy wanted an APC and wanted to make sure he had the right number before he launched into the procurement process. If so, Mr ERF scared him off.

If you're using PBX trunks most have only 1 number and the rest are 'terminal' numbers. The number on your desk that is used to call you is most likely a DID (Direct Inward Dial). We started attempting to convince customers they didn't need numbers for all their PBX trunks back when we went ESS. Our objective was to slow down the number appetite of the public and hopefully not need to issue new area codes.......didn't work. All those pagers that didn't require a long distance call had to buy the entire 10,000 number prefix back then. Then they used on average fewer than 40% of them.

We buy PRI and bandwidth from several suppliers - AT, Cogent, and whoever TalX offers here. Via seperate paths. The house switch currently busts out indials, studio lines are supervised by us to beat transhybrid loss (we never turn them to two wire) and we just started migrating to some recommended cards which Asterisk talks to. By next year this time we will be i.p. company - wide on an Asterisk system. Open source, runs in Linux. Lets me ccall any telephone in R1's 58 stations with a 4 digit dial.
And it's gotten far beyond GMCs.

If you're good it at it fake an Indian accent; that should add to the fun! If the guy starts speaking to you in Hindi tell him
you're an AMERICAN now and AMERICANS speak ENGLISH!

The calls we have been getting are from "Geek Support". The first calling individual was a Hindi native speaker. (Mary taught in
EMU's Foreign Language department.)
This was a good joke....
One said that my computer was running a virus and they had gotten a report. I asked how he knew it was from my computer and he said
it was from IP 192.168.1.100. I laughed. I don't use the standard sequence and the only computer that was on was my Linix box and
it is on the inside of three firewalls and two have no pass-through ports at all.
We have gotten several others since. I am never very polite, but I am going to start the "How long can I keep them on line" game
with the next one....
Matt
