I found a tire shop that 8 virgin 9.50 x 16.5 tires. But they have been on the shelf for 4-5 years. Can I expect problems because have been stored so long. I have never heard of the Baja brand before or ever had experience with old tires.
Thanx. David

You need to check the dot numbers they could be twice as old. There age would likely scare me from using them.

Because GMC tires are usually loaded close to their rated capacity, paying attention to their condition, inflation and their age, is really important.

If you ask, there are literally hundreds of stories from the gang here of blow-outs [usually at highway speeds because that's where the tire gets heated most] from members and acquaintances.

Many of us have resorted to closely checking the production dates when we buy tires and replacing them when they're past the 5 year mark. The age comes from most manufacturers who recommend replacement at 5 years.

I look at it this way: Cost of 6 decent-quality tires: 6x$200= $1200 approx; Cost to repair a fender beaten to death by the flapping skin of a blown tire: $12-$1500.

The tire replacement is much easier to live with than a beat-up coach: and of course after the repair you'll still have to buy tires.

I've had 3 motor home tire blow outs, all on sob coaches with aged out Michelins. I've had my GMC coach just over ten years, driven it nearly 40k miles and am nearing the end of life for the 6 tires currently on it. I've followed the 5 year advice and never had a blow out on this coach. [so far, touch wood!]

That being said, I've read that the vast majority of tire problems relate to the operation of the tire while its underinflated. This causes extreme heating of the tire, esp at highways speeds as the carcass of the tire is flexed and twisted.

Thank you for the input. I can pick them up for $50 a piece which seems like a deal. I will check the date codes and if they are over 5 years it sounds like its a waste of money.

In Oregon, if you are stopped for anything, they MAY check your tire date code. 7 years is the max, anything older than that and you get a ticket. Don't know about any other states, but if there was an accident and they were looking for a cause... Make your own judgment.

If they were kept indoors, out of the sun and moisture, thay should be OK for a year or two.

I would think they would be fine to get that GMC from your place to the playa and back. I think usually tires that fail due to age, normally do so on hot days, and high speed and longer running. I personally have not had old trailer tires, or truck tires fail on short low speed drives. I have run alot of old trailer tires over the years, and have only had issues with old tires on highways and hot days. and usually well over an hour into the trip.

but that is only my unprofessional opinion.

You really are not making these gmc's do much of distance driving if I remember?

I do not know if the temps there, or the harshness of the area play into the situation.

There might be an issue with rim width on that size tire. As I recall, 16.5" tires need to be mounted on the proper width rim for them to work right. Maybe there is not a significant enough difference between an 8.75 and a 9.50 to make it an issue.

If you are still running a 3.07 final drive I would not to a larger than stock tire.
