Bob, you will find that on the CV joint that there are ridges that keep the
balls separated. One of those ridges is cut back, shorter, different than
the others. Once you find that shorten ridge there is a keeper ring that
you will have to expand out to allow the axle to slide out.

Bob, Maybe something in here will help:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g3120-replacing-a-cv-joint-boot.html
Since I didn't address the inner joint there, let me tell you: Unless the
inner boot is damaged and requires replacement (unusual), DO NOT follow the
manual instructions and remove the "can". It's totally unnecessary to do
so and a PITA to reinstall. After removing the outer CV, hold the inner CV
by its 6-hole flange and "drop" the assembly on the outer end of the axle.
The first or second time you do that, the sheet metal cover inside the
flange will pop out, dislodged by the inner end of the axle and the 3 ball.
Be careful taking it apart from there: Each of those balls contains some
absurd number (51?) of needle bearings which you MUST hang onto. With
those captured, the rest of cleaning and repacking (or axle R&R) can be
accomplished ithout disturbing the inner boot an its can.

Bob,
What kind of grease did you use on the CV joint / do you intend to use in the wheel bearings?

Thanks Bruce, and Ken. Located the snap ring. Apart, cleaned, greased, and boot in place. Ready to put back in as soon as I get my
reworked knuckle assembles greased, and together. I bought a knuckle/bearing tool from Jim K a few years ago. That tool is worth
every dime. And I made this time simpler because I put a screw driver slot in the 3 bearing retainer bolts the last time. These
reworked knuckles have the grease fitting with the grooved bearing spacer. So this will be the last time I'll have to do this.
Thanks again.
Bob
