I got the coach out today. It gets to sit inside a barn, out of the elements. Here in California it does not have to endure hard winters, but it was dusty. It has been sitting since Branson.
So, I washed it. And that is what I don't like. Washing the GMC.
When I was a kid, I practically rubbed the paint of several cars, waxing them. Now, washing the GMC seems like an endless task. It goes on forever. Yards and yards of surface, two extra wheels plus a spare. And with the drought, I was endlessly turning water on and off.
I have tried a fancy brush that fastens to a hose. I mostly wash by hand and dry with towels.
But, I don't like it.

Stop washing it. RIGHT NOW!! Don't you know that cleaning an antique can decrease it's value to almost nothing??
That's not dirt, it's experience you can see!!
Or, call it a model kit in 1/1 scale, and it's just weathering. You know, to make it look more real and less like a toy.

I'm with you, George. I often regret having sacrificed the 50' OEM paint
job that served me so well for the trip to Alaska and a couple of years
thereafter. An occasional blast with the pressure washer was all it took
to keep it happy and looking its very best. Even a new scratch, scrape, or
ding here and there didn't really matter -- a quick squirt with 'most any
handy nearly white spray paint returned it to its former glory -- from the
mandatory 50' viewing range.
After the trip to Topeka Graphics (and concomitant $$$) every dust spec and
water stain glared like a big sore. A scratch or argument with a sweetgum
tree caused true anguish and gnashing of teeth. The yard helper who
usually has the pleasure of washing "Tweety Bird" suffered entirely too
much harassment over missed spots and non-gleaming Alcoa's.
But, now that Topeka's 10+ years behind us, things are getting better. I'm
back to closing my mind to images within about 20' of the GMC so life is
less stressful. Perhaps one day we can get back to the pressure washer.
But then there's that body man who works part time for my street rod
building friend ... Just keeps saying "Oh I can fix that easy...". :-(

You should look for the group of students in their bathing suits washing cars to raise money for school activities or trips. Take a folding ladder so they don't walk on the roof (and fall off)and pay them at least twice what they get for a car (it really is an easy wash job) and 3X if they dry it off and leave you clean windows. And you'll leave with a good feeling and a clean RV!

This is a little bit off topic, but in 1997 I drove my newly completed
fully restored 1961 Cadillac coupe DeVille to enter it into HOT AUGUST
NIGHTS in Reno, Nv. A few miles from Reno, we ran into a swarm of locusts.
Car was coated with bug goo. Did not think about washing the car until we
got to Reno and checked into our hotel. Next morning, had to contend with
Sun Fried Bugs on the car. Went to a local power wash armed with a pocket
full of quarters, dropped em in the slot, soaped that big long low car up,
and washed the bug STUFF off. Switched the valve to rinse, and it kept on
soap dispensing. What a mess. Went back to the hotel and bribed a valet to
find me a hose and some shade. Spent the rest of the day re washing that
Cad, Re glazing and finally Paste waxing with Mother's Carnuba by hand.
Wishing all the time for something like a Deuce Roadster instead of that
loooong black Cadillac with all those flat panel and fins and all that
Chrome and spoke wire wheels. Lot of extra work. If my Gmc gets a little
crusty, what the heck. I want to drive it, not wax it. On those long road
trips and rolling rallies, we keep the glass and mirrors and interior
clean, the outside, not so much. Jwid.

It's a twice a year ritual for me. Occassionally I go to a truck wash as well. Basically after the pollen in the spring when it is really gross and then mid summer after a half year of use. Yet another reason why I have limited desire (and the funds) to pay for a new paint job. I'd feel bad about the things I do with it now.

I spent 10 years washing my faded blue 230 before I had it painted.
Fresh paint makes it a joy to wash.
I use a wash mitt on some of it but mostly done with a good quality
brush on a long handle and the hose with a sprayer. 5 gallon bucket of
soapy water. Gotta set up a big step-stool in 6 places to get all of the
roof. (might be more with a 260). I can wash it, including
wheels/tires and airbags, and squeegee and towel it dry in about an
45minutes. I spent a lot of time and money making it such a good
looking piece of vintage plastic. It needs to be clean when it's out
doing it's thing. :-)
Our cars are actually jealous of the attention the GMC gets.

I wash the pine grot off mine once a year and let it go from there. I figure, I'm inside it, I can't see the dirt. Someone suggested soapy wather with a bit of bleach in, works fine.

Yes and I almost forgot. When I park next to coaches like Kelvin's at
Rallies, it makes his fresh paint jobs look better by comparison. Always
trying to look out for my fellow GMCers. (grin)

Washing it is bad enough, but WAXING it is worse. After it's waxed I'm surprised my right arm isn't the size of the Hulk's !

That is why GM used EMRON....after seeing what that stuff would stand up to with the low-country 4 wheel crowd sinking windshield deep in pluff-mud, rinsing off and not TOO many minor scratches, I was impressed.
I wash ours before we leave and after we return. Just not too anal about it. If I cannot write my name in the dust, we're good.
