[GMCnet] Original front wheel bearing assembles [message #242116]

The main problem is that the knuckle bore gets oversized over time. The 78 GMC that I put the 1 ton assembly in last year also had both the hub worn a little over .001. I got reworked knuckle castings from Dave L to put in my GMC. My question is, Are the hubs as prone to wear as the knuckle castings. I haven't taken mine apart yet. So am I going to have to rework my hubs also?

Bob, I had both knuckles from my 75 Eleganza reworked by Ken Thoma (now
deceased). He told me the knuckle forgings were too soft for the load
and the bores became egg-shaped. I also had to have Ken rework one hub
-- it was so tapered I could feel the taper with my fingers. I mik'd
the other hub and it was OK. Ken said that once the knuckle became
worn, then it would (or could) start to effect wear on the hub.

Thanks Leland. We're heading to Texas in two weeks. I'm thinking of what my odds are of having my hubs bad. I have the bearing tools for the job. One test might be to remove the wheel, and axle nut. Pull the axle back. Then see if I can pull the hub out by hand as the press fit would be gone due to the wear on the hub. Hopefully other will comment on my odds of having my hubs OK.Thanks Bob Dunahugh Member GMCMI

This allows the outer races to circulate and wear. The hubs (thought manufacturing tolerances were not always that great) do not wear as much as the inner races are clamped by the preload of the CV joint spindle. As these are often loose from the light press that they should be for a proper bearing installation, Dave metalizes these also and grinds them to the size they should be.

Along with reconditioning the control arms, bushings and ball joints , with Steve Ferguson's help, I also found that it needed the front hubs/knuckles/bearings re-done. I talked to Dave Lenzi on the phone and he told me the best way to handle this was to ship the assemblies to him. He said he could measure everything and determine what needed attention. He mentioned that the hubs are often okay (mine weren't), and that he can ofter re-use them without reconditioning them.

I have been very happy with the decision to go this route and like the fact that I can grease the front bearings periodically without having to take them apart. This was in the early days of the Hubler 1-ton front end and was the more affordable option at the time. I still would have to consider doing the front end this way if I were doing it now, even though I understand the advantages of the 1-ton conversion.
