Fan in my laptop was sounding like a bad GMC heater / AC blower squealing and rattling. Tryed 2 different times to order a replacement on eBay for my model X61s and got slightly different styles that wouldn't fit. Getting tired of taking out lots of jewelers screws to work on it and find I have a non usable replacement. Tryed spraying different lube things in there with some minor success, but the bearing wear was still causing it to sound obnoxoius and nothing lasted. So I gave it one last try, took the fan apart at using a q-tip put a fraction of a drop of Valvoline Synpower on the the tiny fan shaft. Purring like a kitten. That's all I buy anymore is Synpower.

I used SynPower to lubricate moving parts on my closet doors. Detent balls were installed and getting a little tough to snap open or shut. A little dab of SynPower, and they roll like new.

Just don't get it on the clothes or carpets! As ususal stuff that works best is pretty nasty staining wise. Thought it might be too thick for the little micro fan motor to spin but no problem.

I wish I had though of that. I went through two Chinese junk replacement fans on an old T30 last year. I eventually bought a genuine replacement and took care of the problem. If I ever have another fan problem I'll try your trick. The machine I was replacing it on is one that runs 24x7 forwarding APRS packets off of the air to the Internet. The fan died after 8 years of continuous operation. Maybe I ought to preemptively take it apart and lubricate it.

I keep maybe ten different size fans on hand, evertyhing we have uses them any more, and they're all different.  Pretty much all of them can be had though.  Between Mouser and DigiKey I've been able to source by size and current draw.  So far, I've always been able to find ball bearing ones, which outlast the sleeve bearings by far.  I'd been using a synthetic lube from GC, but I'm gonna go get some Synpower.  It will be cheaper and seems to do as well or better.
All these fans are made on the Pacific Rim, so I lube them before install.

I had luck in the past with Cailube MCL spray but this bearing had been dry too long and had a touch of slop. The SynPower is viscous enough to make up the tollerance. So easy to pull out the fan wheel as the field just holds the assembly centered. Used a head of pin sized quantity. I almost ordered a new computer today but dodged it for now.
