Jim, I'm familiar with the expressions: "jury rigged or "jerry rigged"
having to do with fitting temporary parts in an emergency. And the phrase
"jerry-built" which has a separate origin and implies shoddy workmanship
not necessarily of a temporary nature, but not just "rig" the way you use
it.
I often wondered about that, so I hit the internet.
There were 14, 283 mentions of sailing, sails, trucks and other motor
vehicles and this one:
"to put in proper order for working or use."
Obviously that wasn't the one you were using.
OK, so I exaggerated a little, it was only 13,000... ;-)
After only 10 minutes of clicking and scanning, I think I found the
definitions that you use when you say "rig".
1: to manipulate or control usually by deceptive or dishonest means <rig
an election>
2: to fix in advance for a desired result <rig the contest>
3: to manipulate fraudulently: to rig prices.
I was beginning to think all those folks you were referring to were
swindlers and crooks, until I ran across #4 below.
4: set up (equipment or a device or structure), typically hastily or in
makeshift fashion.
