Hi forum,

My family of 5 is looking for a GMC to travel around in. I have a fair amount of experience with cars (owned over 20 of them in 20 years). And with 1970's campers. Here's a picture of our last camper, a 1972 VW Contempo conversion. We made it reliable and drove it to Toronto and to KC from Wisconsin a few times.

https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash2/t1/26114_105805132775037_1865507_n.jpg?lvh=1

Hated to get rid of that rig, but the family was growing and it just was not big enough. We transitioned to a large pop-up camper, but the family has grown once again, which has brought us to this GMC.

Anyway, I have posted a request to the facebook group, but figured I'd post it here as well. The wife and I are looking for a rig that sleeps 6 in the upper midwest (I've been burned traveling to buy a camper in the past and would like it to be somewhat local). We are looking to spend 8-15K for a livable reliable rig. We have seen a few hopeful units, but nothing we have settled on. There is a nice Palm Beach for sale in Indianapolis that we may go look at in the next week or so, but if you know of any others please point me in that direction.

Howdy and congratulations with your interest in the classic GMC Motorhome. I have been involved with these vehicles for several years and I would be willing to provide you with true guidance as to what to look for before you commit to a purchase. I live in a St. Paul MN suburb, was born and raised in Baraboo WI, and have relatives in Baraboo and in Lodi WI. I suggest we make arrangements to chat off line, typing is not one of my strong abilities.

There you go. Latch on to john and or one of the other owners in your area for assistance. This is a much more active and informed group than the relatively new face book group. Thanks for checking in. I tow a 66 baja behind our gmc.
Make sure that you make plans to attend our Fall convention in your area come September.

I know of a couple for sale in Indy if you're heading this way. One priced a little high, but the guy may be willing to come down. The other is priced low, but needs a lot of love.

You're money ahead if you can find a very well-maintained / updated coach. Find the right one and the previous owners will have spent far more than your budget on preparing your "new" coach to travel the country reliably and comfortably. Buy a project and your get to spend lots of hours working on it, which can be rewarding as well, but will no doubt end up costing you lots more by the time you're done.

There is a mountain of info on the various GMC-related websites and forums, so I'd recommend absorbing as much of it as you can. Don't get in a hurry, and the right coach will turn up. I scoured the country for months before finally (and realistically) limiting my search to the southwest. I finally found the "right one" in west Los Angeles and have never had a moment's regret.

You'll want to make sure you save some of your budget for the inevitable glitches that might render your "new" coach not-quite-ready for the great American road trip (like tires that are out of date, suspension components that need a little love, air bags that are past their expiration date, etc.). But your path is a great one - you'll be driving a classic that has yet to be truly equaled (IMHO, that is...).

David, I've called on that one and spoke to the owner for a while. He is really attached to it and is not sure about selling. They had the some head work done to it and would most likely need some work before it would make it back to Madison. Really nice guy though and you can tell he cares a lot for the old girl.

We are looking at two of them at Mount Comfort RV near Indy.

Looking at the options, this one seems to be the best option.

It already has Alcoa rims and the awnings which are big savings. The body and interior are in good shape and the rig has low miles (40K).

Rob,

Thanks, that is a pretty good looking option. Though I am not certain that there is enough sleeping space.

i agree do not rush. i would keep looking at everything no matter where one day the right one will show up . this community pointed me in the correct direction. with these peoples support i would be confident to let them help choose with you.
i did and bought sight unseen a coach in Indiana i flew in and it is now in Australia. i did blow a transmission and to be fair i should of had it serviced before i went on the trip. but i am still very happy.

Joshua,

Here's a link to the 26 foot Avion Brochure: http://www.bdub.net/publications/Avion2/avion-int-261.htm

The brochure shows that you have the twin beds down the back and the dinette converts to bed as well.

Unfortunately the seller is asking a bit too much for the coach, I'd say today it's worth what NADA says it is which is about $5000.

DEPENDING on it's condition up close and personal.

Regards,
Rob M.

Tough to get 6 in an Avion. 2adults, and two small children would be sleeping capacity. The dinette is not long enough for an Adult or big kid. No bunks.

Tom,

According to the brochure the dinette converts to a bed 40" x 72"

I'm probably wrong but I could have sworn that my parts Avion had brackets in the ceiling for bunks but no bunks. I couldn't figger
out why that was.
