I know there has been a LOT of chatter about wheels lately. I didn't see any mention of the 16" steel wheel #126202 offered by Southwest Wheel. Anyone have any experience with that one? It looks to have the bell shaped spyder and the hole is 4.56. Looks like it should work, but ....

Interested in your thoughts. Thanks.

My storage neighbor bought one for his 1976 coach and it would not clear, He had the standard front calipers. There's still some mystery around this wheel in that some work and some don't.

Dave,

Here's a link to the specs for Alcoa wheels for a GMC; in order to know if the 126202 will fit you need to check with Southwest
Wheel and obtain all the same dimensions.

Let us know what you find out.

If you have the combination of new brake rotors, combined with a bulky
brake caliper, the steel wheels that you are looking at will lack
clearance by 1/8" to 1/4" or more. That wheel WILL WORK on the rear drum
brakes without issues. There is a way to make them work on the front. It
will involve disassembly of the front hubs and knuckles as well as the
rotors and front wheel bearings. Then the wheel studs are replaced with
studs that are longer by the amount of the thickness of the space required
to allow clearance on the caliper. A extension is fitted on the outer hub
that likewise extends the centering flange a similar amount. All custom
made for the amount of clearance required for the specific front end being
worked on. Not an inexpensive option, but if you are bound and determined
to use steel wheels, it can be done. When costs are compared to forged
aluminum wheels, that also depends. I make all the pieces, and I like to be
fairly compensated for my work. If it sounds like I am trying to convince
you to not use the steel wheels, listen to the music. It is your money.

Thanks for the help guys. Sounds like I'll be rolling on the 16.5's until next year. Budget for this year went to a one ton conversion from Manny. The crate should arrive today!
