First, thanks to all of you that responded to our recent post about replacing our black tank and installing a macerator. You provided a vast amount of information and we now have a plan that should come to fruition some time this spring.
There are a few other details we'd appreciate more information on. We have seen or driven by only a couple dump stations and have not use one yet.
About what length of macerator dump/pump hose should we plan to have available from where it exits/leaves the coach. This is the distance to the dump hole at a dump station. Is 10 feet enough? Or what would be a reasonable length necessary for the average dump station? We probably will carry an extension just in case we need more.
Secondly, is the RV toilet paper a must or is that just a marketing gimmick? Can we use regular toilet paper?
Thirdly, are the RV black tank chemicals/additives necessary. Do they really work? Our local RV sales/parts supplier tells us the chemical mix is mostly formaldehyde. Do the chemicals really help break down waste and toilet paper? Is it more of a deodorizer than anything else? Thoughts?
Lastly, is there any dumping station etiquette that we should be aware of so we don't look like novice idiots. Can equipment be washed off at the station, like the slinky if used? Is there anything we should absolutely not do so as not to piss off the nexts in line?
Ah, one more thing just came to mind. It sounds like there might occasionally be a fee to use a dump station. Is this common and what would be an average or range of fees?
************
And off this topic but somewhat related - potable water supply and hoses.
I believe at each dumping station we've seen further on down the line a spigot for potable water. Or is that off at some other location? How many of you trust this source of water or do you think like I'm thinking that someone has inadvertently used the "wrong" hose on that spigot and we're better off gathering our fresh water supply at some other location.
Have any of you used one of those newly advertised expandable hoses that "fit in a paint can" for storage? Are they any good? Or would we be better off just getting a separate old fashion 1/2 inch hose for potable water.
Again, thanks to all. I've said it before but it's worth mentioning again - this forum is priceless.

You might consider 2 10 ft hoses that you can join together to extend your dump range.
I would not consider any water faucet near a dump station as "potable."
RV toilet paper maybe a marketing item. I've had no trouble with off the shelf stuff.
We do attempt to use the in-coach only for liquid waste. Prefer to use facilities at campgrounds for #2. Less to worry about.
Many State Rest Areas, near State lines have dump stations. The few pay for dump stations that I've seen price in the $5 to $10 range.
Consider, after a long trip, adding a bag of ice to the black tank, drive the coach so road motion will help break up any items in the black tank.
No diapers or female hygiene items in the tank. Plastic does not do well.
I have a as seen on TV hose, but have not tried it yet.
For potable water connection, the white RV hose is the desired type.

I get by with less then 10 feet of hose off the back bumper. I have to pull in just right, but have not had an issue. I have 50 foot extra hose, but I leave it at home.
no idea as far as the RV toilet paper. It is cheap, and we do not go through that much, so I just buy RV toilet paper from walmart.
I have not noticed much help with chemicals. but there are formaldehyde, and there are enzyme. there are some that can be used in a septic, and some that you should not use in a septic. I make a point to buy and use the "safe for septic" stuff, even though i am not sure it helps, but it is really not that expensive.
as far as dump station go, cost depends on where you are at. I know of lots of free dumps, so I try to use them. I have seen some gas stations, that charge $10, but if you buy something they charge $2. keep your eye out, there are dump stations in lots of interesting places, and some are not well marked.
I installed a dump that i can hook my macerator up at the house. it pumps it right into my city sewer clean out. I have had an issue with it stinking up the basement, but I think I have that solved now. I just made sure to dump when the wife was not going to be home for a few hours, so it could air out. but I sealed off an extra drian that would of been for a washer.

I have 10' coming off the LR corner of the coach. That's been plenty
everywhere I've dumped and more importantly, it's enough to reach the
sewer cleanout at home. Carrying an extension is a good idea but I
haven't for 11 years with no need for one.
> Secondly, is the RV toilet paper a must or is that just a marketing gimmick? Can we use regular toilet paper?
I've used both. I tend toward RV paper now. The macerator obviously
will handle both but there are trick to using and RV toilet (flushing
with enough water was one I had to learn) and the RV paper has proven to
be pretty much "clog free". It has less adhesives than regular paper so
you know it breaks down quicker. Maybe why I've had no issue with my
macerator for 11 years. Who knows.
> Thirdly, are the RV black tank chemicals/additives necessary. Do they really work?
Oh, you'll need something. The smell will tell you that after a day in
the hot sun.
Jerry Work has one he swears by that I haven't tried yet. I think it's
"Happy Campers" something...

You don't want the formaldehyde type. You want an enzyme type. Our
system is big enough that you can actual get a colony of good stuff
growing down there and help keep the smell down and break things down a
bit. I've had good luck with Odorlos.

You'll be so quick that they won't be pissed, they'll be amazed. How odd
is it that we love to show off our poop-shooters? :^)

Mickey,
As noted in an earlier email about 17 feet of tubing extend from the rear bumper and it has been long enough. IIRC I only needed the
10 foot extension once.
Wal-Mart sells RV toilet paper and that's what we use. I GUESS it breaks down faster / better than household rectal ribbon.
I don't use any of the formaldehyde based toilet chemicals as it will kill the bacteria in a septic tank system.
Most dump stations provide a hose to flush the crap out of your slinky, however, with a macerator you don't have to do that. At most
dump stations the water is marked "NON POTABLE" and you fill up at your parking spot or a separate location.
We've been touring the USA for five summers and I think we've only paid to dump once maybe twice. We stay in RV parks and fill up
with fresh water and dump before we leave when we get down around 1/2.
I have one of these that works quite well:
http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/handi-hose-50/1646
I chose the 50 foot model just in case, most times it IS overkill!

Mickey,
You have some good answers here, but I will clear up just a couple based on work experience and some since.
Whether you are using a macerator or not, use TP that has low wet strength. The high strength will even choke the plumbing of a macerator system given the chance. We use stock we have tested and carry a peanut butter jar to test new stock if we have to acquire any mid-excursion.
We carry two household size hoses. The potable hose is dedicated to that service. It is carried inside the coach with the ends coupled and cleaned regularly. The washing hose lives in the LP tank locker.
As to black tank treatments, avoid anything that contains formaldehyde. It will kill a septic system and does not work all that well. Want some? (I did work for Thetford at one timeWe.) We have been satisfied with a product called Happy Camper. It isn't cheap, but it does work pretty well. When we are traveling or at any number of dry camp locations we do use the head for everything.

Personally, I think it's silly to not use the motorhome waste facilities as they were intended (#1 and #2). I can't understand why it would be against the rules to take a poop in a tour bus biffy. Maybe as a courtesy to the driver or whomever is tasked with dump duties, but I can see no other reason.
That said, it absolutely makes sense to be careful what you flush. Human waste and suitable TP should be the only things to go down the toilet. You are asking for trouble if you flush dental floss, feminine hygiene products, wet wipes, paper towels, etc down the toilet.
We recently got a free package of Thetford TP from CW, but absent of that, we use Scott single ply, which is available at most grocery stores. I also use a RV supply product called "Pure Power" in the tank, IF it will not be dumped on a daily basis. It is an enzyme product and you only need 2 oz for 40 gallons of tank capacity.

I could not agree more! To me the fact that we can bring our own toilet with us on trips for both (#1 and #2) is one of the reasons we love to go in the first place. We like having our own bed, toilet and yes we use the shower. I really do not want to share a toilet with anyone else other than HER. We have been RVing for over 30 years and have never (knock on wood) had a problem with the toilet. We did have a recirculating toilet when we bought the coach back in '98, but we replaced that soon after with a ceramic throne.

I have noticed that the "cheap" grocery store TP is pretty much the same as the RV specific stuff. So we just buy the cheapest stuff we can stand to use.
But the biggest thing is big wads of any kind of TP does not break down very well. So just do not toss big wads down "the hole."

Mike,
You are 100% correct!
Actually you only need a single sheet of toilet paper.
Instructions below:
1) poke you're a finger through the single sheet of toilet paper
2) lean over slightly to allow access to your nether regions
3) use the finger to clean any residue from around the area where your large intestine is exposed to atmosphere
3) remove the hand with the finger used for the clean up from under your bottom
4) using your other hand wrap the single sheet of toilet paper tightly around the finger
5) slowly pull the finger out from the tightly wrapped toilet paper
6) the toilet paper will clean the finger and voila, you've done the paperwork
7) it may be necessary to use a second sheet of toilet paper to clean one's fingernails

It seems you Aussies have not been properly taught how this is to be done neatly. I will have to demonstrate - mimicing certain portions of the procedure of course - for you the next time we're in the same place. Suffice to say your technique is crude and boorish and wastes paper. Remind me when you next see me.

It seems you Aussies have not been properly taught how this is to be done neatly. I will have to demonstrate - mimicing certain
portions of the procedure of course - for you the next time we're in the same place. Suffice to say your technique is crude and
boorish and wastes paper. Remind me when you next see me.
