Lost power for about 2.4 hours this morning. Would not be surprised if it
goes out several more times before the weekend thaw. Email listserver
availability will be sporadic during those times.
Will do what I can to keep the list running, but primary goal is to stay
warm through this...

Both of my RF plants close to Patrick (One in Tyrone, one in Peachtree City) are currently making their own electricity. Tomorrow afternoon, I will have to start schlepping diesel if they don't have commercial power back.

Temp's been dropping since yesterday. 34 degF at 7:45 AM. 30 now(2:45)
and dropping to around 26 tonight. At least the power has stayed up for
the past three hours and the ice has given way to snow...

Power's been pretty steady since noon. The freezing rain has changed to
snow. Hopefully, the worst is past.

I'm still burning diesel at 4:20P just off Hiway 74.. Plant power is down to about 6%, due to ice on the antenna. My heated antennas (the Tyrone one is the only non-heated one) are all doing just fine. I expect that one has grown an icicle across the loops of the antenna. The automatics will keep the radio from hurting itself, but I doubt you can hear it more than a mile or so away at that level. Kindly tune to 107.5 :)

Subdivision just east of it. I can see it out my dining room window. Guy
in my subdivision was the PITA complaining about RF interference. He got
kinda' put out with me when I didn't get all worked up about it...

Well, he's kinda hosed, in that the station was there before the subdivision was. Consequently I've no statutory requirement to help him out, although we certainly will give advice if he asks. Who's geting into what, do you know? Maybe mine, maybe Mr Mike's (95.5 I think, Clear Channel peanut whistle on the same tower) maybe some of the 2 way and ham dreck, although I'll note the ham repeater was squeaky clean last time I took a swept analyzer down there. I had the FAA and FCC guys along, a Delta claimed he had some interference when he flew over it. We demonstrated everything there was well within the required mask(s) and the problem never reappeared anyway. Some of the cel guys and virtually all of the wi-fi guys have equipment which spews garbage and for which we often get blamed. The cell folks at least will fix theirs when you get hold of the responsible party. The problem kind of stems from all the HD radio transmitting stuff is
linear, so if the system has poor (low) return loss, anything that gets back into the amplifier gets reamplified and up the pipe it goes. Given a fairly broadband antenna, it can reradiate and create problems. Both we and clear channel bandpass filter the piss out of it to preclude this. An outdoor antenna feeding an outboard RF amplifier will often generate garbage, and a mast mounted preamp is pretty much guaranteed to do so. One which doesn't will cost substantially more than the TV, and antenna... so no one buys them. And 73.333 of the FCC Rules specifically excludes them from interference fixing as a result. I've 50+ years' experience getting RF out of places it hadn't ought to be, usually it can be reduced to where it isn't a concern. Many people aren't willing to make the effort though.
Oh - the power.... I was getting an indication due to the way the remote control works. When I went and looked using my web browser, I saw it was on Fayette EMC again.

I'm guessing it will be no surprise to you that I had to do the telephone lines in one house in two shielded pairs. We had two lines and the modem on one the answering machine on the other were both effective detectors for a nearby AM station.

An interesting side story along that interference line. When I was in the Army at age 22, I received a letter from the FCC forwarded to me by my parents. It was a cease operation order because of the interference I was generating in my parents' neighbor's TV set. Some neighbor spotted the 2 meter (146 mhz) antenna on my parents house and said I was cause the problem.
My response to the FCC went something like this.
Dear sir.
I am fairly sure that the station that I have been operating for the past year is not the cause of the RF interference at xxx address in Hammond, Indiana. I understand that the interference is being received on TV channel 2 which is in the 54 to 60 MHZ range. (VHF low band) I currently have only been operating on the US Army MARS frequencies which are licensed by the DOD (not FCC) and are located in the HF bands not the VHF low band. My normal power seldom exceeds 100 watts and I have not received any other complaints locally.
The only antenna I have ever installed near the address in your letter is tuned to 146.00 mhz (VHF High Band) and has no equipment currently attached to it.
I have talked to my CO and he said that if you need additional assistance in locating the problem in Hammond, Indiana he will gladly let me have some time off to assist another government agency as long as you pick up the expenses.

I am here next to disneyland can hear the train whistle and the fire works. We have a warm votex here

The weather guessers missed it again as usual. It was supposed to start Tuesday night at 6 and snow all day tomorrow and last night. Redstone Arsenal, NASA, schools, many businesses closed. Yesterday morning awoke to find drizzle instead of the predicted 3" of snow. Rained all day yesterday with the weather guessers changing their forecast every hour without ever mentioning they had been missing it for 20 hours. Finally started snowing about dark and we had about 5" this morning. A very pretty snow. Today is sunny and in the 40's so it's going fast.
