Most people up North have their high efficient furnace exhaust coming out the side of their house in 2 to 3 inch plastic PVC pipe now days. High efficiency furnaces ( 90, to 96% ) can produce a lot of water. As the water droplets come out. You can have an ice column build up so it can obstruct that exhaust. Then the furnace will shut down. I've never had one build up more than a foot high before, ever. My exhaust pipes come out of the house about 9 ft up. Both ice columns are almost 6 ft high now. And almost a ft across. I haven't seem the street in front of my house due to ice, and snow since November. Can't wear my tires out with that. ( GRIN ) And where you can see the street surface. It to is white due to all the salt. My brown van is now white with salt. There have been water pipes breaking that are buried 4 ft down. Water pipes here are down 4 to 6 ft. due to freezing ground. We've had 39 days this winter below zero. Last night we were near 30 below. Today its e
xpected to be warmer than it's been at 7 above. This is IOWA this year. So if your up North. Better check your exhaust out.

Bob,

to add to the safety announcement. it is a good idea to check a few things in this weather. some older furnaces actually vent out the roof, and ice buildup or snow can cause issues. there are some people dead in our midwest from CO poisening from furnace issues. So keep the batteries up in your alarms.

I was up on a roof the other day at a friends, whose had ice issues due to furnace shutting off and on multiple times. it would condensate on his chimney cap, and then freeze. had to fire up his furnace and open some windows to keep the furnace running solid for a few hours to melt off the chimney cap, after we busted some of the ice. We noticed the problem, when his furnace stopped firing and went into a fail mode. there was not enough air flow out the chimney.

so keep a look out also on your plumbing vents, you can have sewage backups, if it is not venting properly.

lastly, my 97% efficient furnace, outlet is just a few feet off the ground. the ice comes up close to the vent, but the heat of the vented air has kept that ice from actually causing a blockage.

lastly, depending on your location, your waterlines can freeze. a town just to the north has issued a "drip" order. telling residents to let a faucet drip, because the feed lines are starting to freeze around town.

I also would suggest, if you do store your GMC outside, you might think about having someone shovel off the roof. I just shoveled off my GMC sunday, and was surprised to see how much dense snow was up there. years past there just was not that much buildup.
