One of my favorite on-line magazines is the Australian "AutoSpeed".
Typical of the interesting articles it always presents is this end-bead
former for tubing:

Don't know that I'll even make one, but it still gave me some ideas for
other projects.
Among other interesting articles in this issue is one on torquing head
bolts. While specifically addressing aluminum heads, it's nonetheless
interesting.
They're full of clever ideas. You "upside down" GMC owners should get them
interested in GMCs! :-)

JP,
I often need a bead on tubing. Usually I put on a brass ferrule using a
modified coupling which allows the tube to slide through it -- but that
leaves a superfluous nut on the tube if the other end is not straight.
So, I'd like to try the modified tube cutter bead maker. BUT, you've got
me feeling very dense: I don't yet understand how the tubing beader works.
Perhaps you have more detailed photos -- or a verbal description?

Ken,
I've added one more photo to that album. That should make it clear.
Using your method, you could remove the nut with a Dremel tool.

Thanks, that does it -- I understand now. Though I don't understand why
there's not a groove in the idler wheels for the bead to be formed into.
I'll have to try that.
Yeah, I've thought of cutting the nuts off -- but figured they don't weigh
enough to kick me out of the allowable GMC MPG range.

Ken,
On my version the bead former is outside the idler wheels where there is
room for the bead. The one at the vansairforce link has a groove in
the idler wheels. It's a better design than mine but I just used what I
had laying around and managed to get the desired result.
You make a good case for small nuts.

Ken,
I bought a tubing bead roller a couple of years ago. I went out and
looked and it's for 5/8" and larger. And, darn it, it would have to be
disassembled to put a smaller inside mandrel in it. So I'll have to
manufacture something. But I think it's important that the inner
and outer dies be rollers to reduce friction and drag. JMHO
