Hi all,
While on this relaxing trip I have allowed my mind to wander around the question as to why the Clasco seems to consume copious amount of oil- a quart every tank of fuel. It runs well, shows no evidence of leakage or smoke but every time I check it is a quart low. I celebrated the dip stick and it appears to be spot on.
I came across this from another forum:

One of my other vehicles is a GMC motorhome, they have a known issue with oil consumption if a car engine ( Olds 455 ) is used with the car valve covers. They still have baffles, just not good enough.
the motorhome and high performance 455 valve covers have really good baffles for the PVC and the breather as the breather will suck oil at WOT.
So you do need baffles, good baffles or you will suck oil out of the engine. And no, it will not show up on the plugs.

While I enjoy a good dipstick as well as the next fellow, I would recommend calibrating it, rather than celebrating it.

While they all pull a tiny amount of oil vapor, a quart a tankful (wow, finally someone who uses more oil than my coach) you should see if you pull the PCV hose. I cleaned my hose with a Q-Tip and ran it again. Second swipe showed no liquid oil.
But, hey, mine acts like yours. Not dripping. Been followed for miles, up and down. Checked and rechecked the PCV. Buy the cheap WallyWorld oil and dump it in daily like I used to do my 50 Chevy when I was a kid. At least the Chevy had the decency to boil out blue smoke when I stepped on the gas after letting off.

Yes, the issue of correct valve covers has come up several times. Especially owners with aluminum valve covers have questioned if this is the cause of their oil consumption.

Have you tried running a quart low to see if it will hold or at least slow
consumption at that level?
And, yes, there was a thread long ago where someone installed chrome valve
covers that caused much increased oil consumption.

Jerry,
Try running it a quart lower and see if the consumption goes down.
You know about the one quart hanging up in the front par of the pan.
I'm not much of a speller, but caught the celebrating.
I know you well enough to know I could never catch you on something like
that, but I hope we can have a good laugh.

Check this thread on Oil Consumption from early March 2011.
I had the same symptoms with my Bob Lamey built 455 with about 60000 miles on it.
I asked the net for help and got many suggestions and a lot of good information but no definitive diagnosis or solution.
I wasn't willing to pull the intake manifold in the "hope" that I would find an internal leak. I just kept adding oil and driving it.
