First they bashed the Qjet for a couple minutes then went on to abandon it for a crusty Carter AFB. Putting a square to spread bore adaptor plate on is like a NASCAR restrictor plate on the primary side. They don't get the whole Qjet small primary venturi speed efficiency thing to say the least. Oy

Typically the people who bash Qjets don't understand Qjets.

AFB's are nice carburators on a square bore manifold but I wouldn't want one on the motor home in place of the quaddrojet they are great on street rods.

A shop towel soaked in gasoline held above an open intake manifold can be
used to make an engine run. How well depends upon a long list of variables,
not the least is the skill of the rag holder. All carburetors mix air and
fuel and control engine speed. Some do it better than others do. A qjet is
no better or worse at this than several other brands. They do have HUGE
secondaries, and if they tip in too soon or too late they present their
own unique set of problems. What they seldom do is go lean at wide open
throttle like several other brands renown to do. I consider that to be a
positive thing as lean mixtures at W.O.T. will destroy a good engine pretty
quickly. Cadillac used a Rochester 4 barrel with 4 equal sized throttle
bores in the 49 - 62 or so era. That was a great carb, trouble free,
tunable, but made of pot metal. Alcohol fuels will destroy one over time.
As far as tuning goes, (if you understand it well) it is hard to beat a
well set up electronic fuel injection system that has the EBL controls
along with knock sensor and computer controlled ignition timing. But, if
you are somewhere east of Kansas City in the middle of Cornfield County,
and your high zoot electronic system goes south on you, Estes and Buford
are not going to get you back on the road easily. No perfect setup. Just
what I think anyway.

When I had had my 1970 GMC with a 396 I ran various carbs on it: The stock QJet, and AFB, a ThermoQuad, even an old 4GC. They all worked (although the 4GC didn't flow enough) but I always went back to the QJet for performance and reliability.

Kerry, there is something immensely satisfying about that QJet secondary roar. It's a sound from my younger days. The next time an SOB pulls up beside you on the freeway, look him in they eye and floor it.

Yeah Qjets are remarkably simple if understood. They tore down that AFB onTV with 2 floats and springs and weights and levers Yikes. My point is that the Rochester guys designed it to work on SBCs to Cad500s with minor differences. The thing to remember is that 99.9% of the time you are driving on the 'small carb ' primaries with super high velocities, yet you have the CFM if needed on demand. A simple secondary air valve tension adjustment will solve most bog issues, the biggest complaint. For the TZE miles I drive, EFI is a no recoop situation

Though I've grown up with carburetors in many of my vehicles, I wonder if converting to EFI may not be the way to move forward. Between the ethanol in the fuel eating up components, and the aging of the population that grew up with carbs, we may soon find that Cletus and Co. only know how to troubleshoot and fix EFI systems in a few years. The more I read and learn about them, the simpler they seem. Only problem is that they don't always have a 'limp home' mode yet.
Time will tell, and it would miss the roar of those secondaries opening!

Sadly the supply of pull-offs from Delco or RP are pretty much exhausted. There are Chinese replacements that are all bright white plastic. Don't know if they work well. If anyone has a good 'closed GM dealer' parts find let me know.

Just remember, God and Carter make good carburetors. But you >do< want a manifold designed for whatever you're stuffing atop the engine.

OK, I'm a speed freak from the 1960's who grew up in Burlington, NC, worked at Sox & Martin when they ran 'A' Super-Stock before the Pro-Stock class came into being...Don Carlton (The Motown Missle) worked there at that time. I've had experience with Carter AFB (aluminum 4 barrel), Motorcraft, Holley, Webber side draft and down draft (305 cid Gurney-Weslake with 4 Webbers), SU, Stromberg 97's, S&S, Kehein side draft throttle plate and CV (Sportster), Ford Autolite INLINE- 4 barrel (1970 BOSS-302), the GM Quadra-jet and other brands I no longer can remember. Of all the 4 barrel carbs out their, the ONLY one that was licensed for use on the most expensive Mercedes Benz automobile during the 1970's was the GM Q-Jet. Why? According to the MBNA service boss it was the only carb out their that could be tuned to meet EPA, MPG, power, drivability and durability. NOTHING, short of electronic fuel injection could touch it.
If some jack-leg mechanic tells you a Q-Jet is junk, find another wrench.
