On the one hand, I get to replace my 2.5 year old tires for the cost of driving the GMC to a competent shop to have them replaced.

On the other hand, I need to find a place that is smart enough to jack up a GMC without damaging it.

I am 50 miles Northwest of Birmingham AL. Can anyone offer suggestions for a shop that won't bend something?

A,

Print out the page from the manual on how to jack up a GMC and give it to the shop's manager. Tell him you have photographs of the
bottom of the frame and if after the tires have been replaced it is not in the exact same condition there will be hell to pay!

Regards,
Rob M.

Same here. I figured if they damaged the frame or blew a windshield they might pay for it eventually, but it would be far more trouble than it was worth.

How do they balance them when you do that?

They balance them on a balancer. I have often instructed shops how to raise my coach and stood right there to make sure they do as I instruct. Never had a problem. If I had very far to drive, I would take them off and carry them. I buy only two at a time anyway.

I have changed out all 6 GMC tires (with help) twice. I can see how a tire monkey could muck up something pretty easily as careless as they are.

It's not paranoia.

I had tires mounted and balanced at a shop once in the late '70s or early '80s while I watched, and they balanced them on the vehicle.

I haven't seen it done since.

If I take them off and haul them, I will have to chase down enough blocks for 4 wheels (I have 2 spares).

I am with you A. I have even been asked how to raise the rear, which I appreciated.

Friends have frequently remarked that I seem paranoid. Particularly about brakes and lifejackets.
My response (in recent years) has been that I understand that it may seem I am paranoid.
But please recognize, I am OLD now and I have always been paranoid.

Appie,

Quite a few guys in the USA use 4 oz of these to balance their GMC tires;

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Walther-Blue-.12g-Airsoft-BBs-5000ct/17133159

I have used Equal: http://www.imiproducts.com/index.php/products/equal/

And Counteract: http://www.counteractbalancing.com/

I am happy with both those products.

I use 6 oz of balancing beads in each tire with excellent results.

Matt,
An old pilot friend of mine often uses the following expression.

There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but
There few old-bold pilots.

My friend is 79 years old and still flies his Boeing Stearmann.

It pays to be a little paranoid at times!
