Greetings:
I am in the process of rebuilding my front clip and have started to reinstall the steering "linkage" parts.
While looking at the steering relay tie rod, it appeared to have a small "bow" downward - As if it were "compressed" down and NOT "bent" up as if something had pushed against it (like a floor jack).
I do not think this is "normal".
I have also looked in the MM and read up on how to check for rod parallelism, but unfortunately, I can not do this till AFTER I re-install everything.
Thus the question.... Is this anything I should be concerned about? - Or is it fairly normal for a vehicle of this size/weight/age?
Looking for thoughts/suggestions/insight.
Thanks for whatever you care to share.

Carl,
GMC was a bit tricky with the nomenclatures they used and changed the names of parts between the Parts Book and the Maintenance
Manual!
For the purposes of this email let's call it the INTERMEDIATE ROD: Reference MM X-7525 SECTION 9 STEERING Figure 2 - Steering
Linkage.
I have looked at quite a few coaches and the intermediate rods were all straight.
With the intermediate rod laying on a flat surface how much is it bowed up?
BTW where did you find the rod parallelism check I can't find it!

Rob,
OK, got the measurement of the bow on a flat surface - Turns out my fence post/eyeball 1/4" gestimate was pretty darn close!....
I took a straight edge and found a section of my driveway (yah, not as good as a surface table but probably good enough) that had only a crack of light showing under a 4' straight edge - Then zeroed out my digital level to the driveway slope.
Laid the rod "flat" (had to be held flat as it had a tendency to roll), placed the d/l in the center, and "leveled" the rod - Measured the distance from the top of the rod, at the tie points with a digital caliper (used that point as that was where MM said to take measurement), to the driveway (L=1.14 - R=1.12) - Then subtracted the "thickness" of each tie point (L=.87 - R=.85) - To get an off level reading of:
(L) ~ 1.14-.87=.27 (R) ~ 1.12-.85=.27
Pretty darn close the eyeball gestimate
Here is a picture of the bow (yah, sure get a lot of use out of my driveway):
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/stuff/p52718-intermediate-rod.html
The bow looks fairly "even", so I don't think it was a result of something "external".
Anyway, appreciate any thoughts on this.
Thanks,
Carl P.

Are we talking rod from steering box to relay(drag link) OR relay to idler arm (center link). My guess is a mal placed floor jack?

Carl,
I was down at the workshop yesterday and got under The Blue Streak to see what it's intermediate rod looks like, unfortunately since
it is installed there's too much stuff in the way to see if it was bowed or not.
Having said that I reckon since yours is bowed down and only 1/4" I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Carl, I have one if you are interested.
I am planning on going to the International in Montgomery in March if that
works for you.

Addendum:
Yes.... The intermediate rod is supposed to be straight! - As would be expected.
I went up to JimK's today, with a straight edge, and measured two rod's in GMC's w/o engines (so I could easily get to the rod) and two rods from his parts bin.
They were all straight, based on laying a straight edge against them - Some small light "gaps" here and there, but to be expected in a forging of that length with dirt/grease on them.
After explaining what mine looked like, he offered me one of the straight rods for a good price - And even though mine was probably OK/useable, the "engineer" in me said.... Deal!
