Hey Guys...

I would like to replace the "louvered" access door with one of the newer style plastic one's...

Any insight as to how difficult this is, and what the process might be?

Do I have to cut both the inner and outer skin and then frame it in?

Thanks again for the help...

My previous Avion had the more modern plastic frig door, but, alas I did not do it.
If you elect to do this please do a photo session as you go.
I would love to get rid of the ugly metal stamping door and go with the plastic door.

I installed one several years ago and have been very happy with it. It lets less rain in than the original metal one did.

Since the walls of the GMC are curved I found that I had to get some small aluminum angle and mount it around the inside of the outer motorhome aluminum "skin" to flatten it a little.
I drilled the skin and the angle and then counter sunk the holes for flat stainless steel sheet metal screws. After I had the frame inside the skin I mounted the plastic door. I have seen other installations where they did not attempt to flatten the skin and they have gaps around the plastic frame.

Tom,

Take a look at mine the next time we meet. I just cut the skin to fit and
screwed the plastic frame in place. Because there's a rib right through
the middle of the opening, I had to cut, heat, and bend some of the louvers
to clear that obstruction. The frame and door easily bent to match the
body contour. I've never noticed ANY water intrusion & couldn't be happier
with the installation.

Emery,

Double Trouble had a new plastic door but it was cockeyed so I decided to replace it. I removed it and installed a new one and when
I go done too was cockeyed! WTH? Turned out that the hole in the side was cockeyed and the plastic frame just conformed to it!

I wasn't going to pull it out and do it over so I used a floor standing belt sander and reshaped the plastic door to fit with the
same gap around all four sides, looks just fine now.

Your method would preclude that from happening as it is safe to assume that the installer would make sure the hole was square before
fixing the angle! ;-)
