As a basic matter of contract law, you're going to have to send them at
least a nominal amount if you want them to "hold" off on selling. That's
called "consideration" and without it, a contract like you're talking about
won't work. Ten bucks, a hundred bucks, tickets to the movies, whatever it
is doesn't really matter.

There are of course a lot more wrinkles to it, but generally, if you don't
put down a deposit, the owner can sell the RV out from under you and
there's nothing you can do about it. Conversely, if you haven't paid
consideration, you can back out. Also, if you haven't paid consideration
and the owner declines to sell it to another buyer who comes along, he
can't sue you for causing him to miss that sale.

This is Contracts 101 which I haven't messed with since law school, and I'm
not licensed anywhere but Mississippi and don't have a shred of legal
malpractice insurance, so I'd advise you to consult a competent attorney in
your jurisdiction, etc. :)
