Believe the 55. Larry. Arguing with a cop that you are not one of those will be about as productive as arguing with the toll booth attendant that we are not six axles........My take anyway.

For those of you that live in California or have towed in California, what is the speed limit for us towing a car. The signs posted along the interstate and other high traveled roads says something like this..."Cars with trailers, and Trucks" Speed limit 55mph. I'm not driving a car, I'm not a truck, and I'm not pulling a trailer....or am I? What does CHP say about us? The area that I am about to travel is 7% down grade and is heavily patrolled, and I don't really want to get into it with the CHP.
Thanks.

Horse's mouth:

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc22406.htm

"V C Section 22406 Maximum Speed for Designated Vehicles
Maximum Speed for Designated Vehicles

22406. No person may drive any of the following vehicles on a highway
at a speed in excess of 55 miles per hour:

(a) A motortruck or truck tractor having three or more axles or any
motortruck or truck tractor drawing any other vehicle.

(b) A passenger vehicle or bus drawing any other vehicle.

(c) A schoolbus transporting any school pupil.

(d) A farm labor vehicle when transporting passengers.

(e) A vehicle transporting explosives.

(f) A trailer bus, as defined in Section 636.

Amended Sec. 22, Ch. 787, Stats. 2000. Effective January 1 2001."

I haven't looked up the definition of passenger vehicle in CA but I bet a
GMC qualifies.

This is not legal advice, I'm not licensed in California, please don't sue
me I don't have any money anyway, etc... :)

Many years ago during the "alleged fuel shortage" that led to the mandatory
national speed limit of 55 mph, I was driving Southbound on Interstate 5 in
N. California. I was driving a VW GTI. It had custom mag wheels, low
profile Dunlop Radials, Custom paint and sported a "I can't drive 55"
sticker in the back window. I was driving with the cruise control set at
the speed limit, and was paced for several miles by a CHP officer who
finally turned on his bubble gum lights and pulled me over. He obviously
had issues with custom cars and their drivers. Suffice it to say that he
had a major attitude problem. I was my usual polite, "Yes sir, No sir"
responses to his tirade about out of state drivers driving "attitude cars"
on his turf and only driving the speed limit when there was a cop around. I
finally reached the end of my politeness and inquired if he intended to
cite me for? ?? and if not, I was going to proceed to drive. That unleashed
a further burst of hostility from him. He finally wanted to see proof of
insurance, registration and my driver's license. I had to get out of the
car to remove my billfold from my back pocket, and when I stood up, I was
at least 6" taller and 30# heavier than he was. He went into self
preservation mode at that time. The whole deal was ugly beyond description.
End result, no citation, but I was seriously Pi**'ed Off for the rest of
the trip. All for driving 55. Can't believe how he would have reacted had
I been actually speeding. All I am saying is a GMC is a vehicle, when you
are towing anything in California, your speed limit is 55 unless otherwise
posted.
