So I went and looked at a 1978 26 footer. It's all original and seems to be
well maintained. Runs good, has new tires and airbags. Has a couple issues
like the alternator is shot, front A/C doesn't work and it needs a new black
water tank. Exterior looks fantastic, interior looks very nice but the
headliner is sagging in some spots and peeling away in others. Interior is
all original and showing its age a little bit. Reminds me of the one for
sale in NC on Bethune (?) auction site for $7500. Glass looks all good.
Underneath, frame looked all good. No weird smells. The owner says he uses
it a few times a year. What's a fair price for one of these in good running
condition but basically just maintained and original from 1978?

Or spend $2500 (directly or indirectly) on transporting it and forget to include that as part of the cost of acquisition.
If you're patient, the $8k range is promising now. I've seen a few on ebay go in the teens recently. But, IMO, ebay is the 4th most pricey place you can look.
RC's personal scale of likely priciness:
1st: clubs
2nd: dealers
3rd: vendors
4th: ebay
5th: craigslist
best: good-ol-boy network

Todd, you still haven't told us where you are. The odds are that someone knows this coach and the owner and can tell you about both...the GMC community is a small pond. If you tell folks where you are, someone will likely tell you who is selling what near you. We had a couple just a few months ago out in CA that was looking. The group steered them to a guy who was aging out and wanting to sell. His coach was first rate and he was a known quality owner as opposed to the jackleg that owned mine previously. I've had to redo all his 'upgrades'. Anyway this couple got a great coach at a great price.
Can't easily do that if we don't know your general location.

My spider senses tell me he's near Buffalo, NY. Approaching retirement, I think. Works for a university, maybe.

Well, if it's the match of the $7500, figure the blackwater, A/C and alternator repair, and tacking up the headliner at what, $3k? Then to you it's a $4.5K coach, no? Might stretch for low mileage. Now you can do all of those for sweat equity - the alternator for sure but the value is what the'd cost at The Oriental's or The Co-op or Sirum's... or Camping Whirled if you just like paying.
