I think these things are going to revolutionize. or they have a really good sales team.
I would be on that order list myself, but with 2 kids and a wife...it really would not work for me. Hope to own one in the future when I am doing some travel by myself.
I have not read how much it weights, or other specs for it being a towd vehicle.

I was half-kidding about the towd.
I fully expect something to derail this, but for $100 non-refundable, I'll bite.

Yeah, a while ago I read somewhere that most of these 'commuter' cars will have to be 3-wheel motorcycles or bumper standards, etc. start kicking in.

been watching this for a while now... the guy has run into some road blocks, but seems to be overcoming them. he has a few skeptics out there thinking he cannot sell the car at the price he thinks he can, and not go bankrupt.
Looks like the latest, he was able to secure a deal on a manufacturing plant that 6 months ago, looked like it fell apart.

I agree. I think this is a doorbuster price. That said, if he's reassembling parts that are already in production for other vehicles it'll e close --but still, that doesn't leave much margin.
I'll add that the $35 Raspberry Pi computer pulled off its success by using mass-produced smartphone parts.
I saw the Elio when they were first announced but didn't sign up. I'm interested now because they made the auto show, have a few prototypes rolling, and announced a relatively close delivery time.

Thanks, Dsn. Based on your post, I went looking. Found this:
"IAV is our powertrain designer and we asked them a couple of your questions, here we go:
Can the Elio be towed all wheels down (toad)?
Cody K., Program Manager for IAV says that "yes, as far as the powertrain is concerned it will be able to be used as a toad and pulled with all wheels flat, like behind an RV." Cody continues that as far as towing capacity behind the Elio, IAV is aware of the need and are designing the capacity into the powertrain."

Uh-oh. May need helmet in NC.
"Sales of the vehicle will most certainly hinge on whether buyers are required to get a motorcycle license. Chip Stempeck, Elio Motors' vice president for marketing, said that every state except Kansas would require that the vehicle be registered as a motorcycle based on federal vehicle classifications. So in some states, a person who does not already have a motorcycle license will have to pass that state's motorcycle safety test, possibly on a 2-wheeled motorcycle. That could be a deal breaker for some people.
Then there's the helmet issue. Mr. Stempeck said that while most states would not require the driver to wear a helmet, New York, North Carolina, Nebraska, Mississippi, Missouri, West Virginia and the District of Columbia will.

Neither of which is what it is designed for. It is designed to take one person to work and home, the vast majority of non-commercial driving that occurs in this country. With our inability to carpool, lack of desire for mass transportation, desire to live in suburbs and exurbs, an inexpensive daily driver for one person to go to work and back can make sense. The ability to put a few groceries in the second seat for making an after work pit stop for milk, eggs, and beer is plenty of storage.
For all other activities, family trips, big box store runs, carpools, etc., a second vehicle would be a must. Not a problem since almost all multi adult member households in this country have multiple vehicles. This is an inexpensive, limited purpose vehicle. Think of it as a safer, air conditioned, weatherproof, commuter focused motorcycle and you'll stop wanting to load it with luggage and drive across the country...

For a 'lifeboat' and 'let's go out to dinner' it's perfect. I'd probably fabricate some saddlebags so you could haul some groceries back...
The helmet thing would be an issue for some of the ladies who don't want to muss their hair.
It comes with AC if I recall from the article I read a few months back?

You both missed my my point, the MANUFACTURER is the one touting the ability to drive long distances and NO ONE is going to do that in a vehicel with no room for luggage.

What Jeremy said. Who would want to drive it cross country. Not me.
The helmet thing will get fixed in all the states, I have no doubt. Will be perfect for what it is designed for. Air conditioning, cruise control, extra, and radio, stick or automatic. I think it will sell like crazy at that price, made in USA.

Hmm, they tour in corvette roadsters, they don't have much room either.
That thing is cheaper than a CanAm three wheeler by a bunch, if it's
proposed sales price holds up.
